GPU (HD 7770) keeps getting stuck in idle mode.

Hi there guys I recently purchased a custom build computer with the HD 7770 graphics card. I have removed and installed all the right drivers, but the GPU wont stay in high performance mode.

When I start a game it runs smooth but after about 5-10 minutes the screen will flicker black for a second or two and the frame rate drops from 60+ to 15-20 fps.

Checking on monitoring software (GPU-Z) I can see the core clock drops from the default 1080MHZ to Idle at 300MHZ.

I don't know whats causing this problem, I tried solving this issue by overclocking the card using graphics overdrive and then third party software such as MSI Afterburner, Asus Tweak and Trixx, but to no avail.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for any comments on this issue.

My specs are:
CPU FX-8350
GPU Asus Direct GU HD7770
Mobo ASrock Extreme3 970 R2.0
Hard disk Western Digital 1TB
Tesla 750W
RAM Patriot Viper 8GB
