GPU GURU's - Welcome!!

It's a long post, but I answer most of the "from the hip" questions for those who actually read the thing! It?s a clean build, so no other video drivers have been installed other than ATI?s Catalyst 3.1.

ATI Radeon 9700 Pro:

When accessing the ?Advanced? tab of the Display Property settings, black horizontal stripes flash across the screen for a split second and then go away. Once in the Advanced menu, don?t seem to be any other problems.

(I?ve run PowerDVD , QIII, UT, HL/CS, SC, BF1942, Office XP Pro, Adobe Premier 6.0, Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and others and haven?t noticed any other problems, yet. That ?flashing? though when accessing Display Properties has me concerned that it?s a prelude to a larger problem and being that I?ve plunked $220.00 down on ATI?s finest ? I wanna be proactive about this here glitchness.).

Please ye Guru?s of the Graphic?s Elite, enlighten one ?9700? acolyte to the error of his ways!

Current System Specs
:

1. MSI K& Master Mobo

2. AMD T-Bird 1.2Ghz/266FSB

3. 512 Mushkin 2100 High-Perf DDR-SDRAM

4. 120GB 7200rpm Western Digital Hard Drive

5. Antec TruePower/TrueBlue 480w Power Supply

6. Plextor PlexWriter 24x CD-RW

7. Logitech MX700

8. ViewSonic PF790 Monitor

9. 3com Etherlink 10/100 NIC

______________________________________________________________________
Original Build used Enermax Whisper EG465P-VE 431w but was replaced w/the Antec 480w

1. BIOS reset to defaults ? then reconfigure for 133/33 =266FSB & CD-ROM Boot.

2. FDisk\Created Partition\Set Active.

3. Booted from WinXP Pro CD-ROM & Formatted NTFS, then Installed OS then reset BIOS device boot order.

4. Installed Linksys 10/100 EtherFast 2.0 NIC (OS Hang on XP Loading - two times). Booted to Safemode w/o networking and loaded into OS fine. Attempted Boot into Safemode w/networking and load sequence locked up on ?amdagp.sys?.

5. Removed NIC and Linksys Drivers from CP & Registry and booted into OS w/out error.

6. Installed LS Etherfast 5.1 NIC and experienced same hang at ?amdagp.sys?. Removed from CP & Reg and rebooted into OS w/out error.

7. Installed Netgear FA311TX NIC and experienced same & uninstalled.

8. Installed 3Com EtherLink 10/100 and booted into OS w/out error WHEEEEE!!

9. Downloaded/Installed current Drivers for 3Com NIC.

10. Updated OS to SP-1 and every update/patch except for the .NET.

11. Performed MSI ?Live-Update? for Mobo BIOS, Onboard Sound, Via Chipset etc.

12. Checked Device Manager for unkown & errors ? none.

13. Checked ?System Information? for IRQ conflicts & resource load errors ? none.

14. Installed Viewsonic WHQL drivers & verified listing changed from ?default monitor?.

15. Disabled Services: Windows Time, Task Scheduler, Secondary Logon, Routing/Remote Access, Remote Registry, Messenger, HID Access, Fast User Switch, Error Reproting Service, Dist. Link Tracking, Comp Browser, Automatic Updates.

16. Set QOS Limit Bandwidth reserve to active and 0%.

17. Set System Performance to BEST (w/exception of XP GUI).

18. Installed DIRECTX 9.0

19. Downloaded ATI Catalyst 3.1 Drivers & Control Panel & installed. Verified that Device manager now listed Primary/Secondary default VGA as Radeon 9700 Series and Radeon 9700 Series Secondary.

20. Set Resolution & Refresh to 1024x768@100hz 32bit on both the ?Monitor? and ?Displays? tabs of the ATI Control Panel.

21. Rebooted and locked up on desktop, booted into Safemode and viewed event log ?found the following error:

_______________________________
Administrative Tools "System" Event Log

Source: ati2mtag
Type: Error
Event ID: 108

?The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\video0 got stuck in a infinite loop. Blah blah blah = device driver, check w/vendor for update?.
_______________________________
Administrative Tools "System" Event Log

22. Rebooted and all seemed to load fine. Checked logs again ? no errors.

23. Verified all Display settings had been maintained but noticed that whenever I accessed the ?Advanced? tab of the Display settings, Black horizontal lines would flash for a split second across the screen.

I began searching the forums, changing BIOS settings, loading compatability defaults, minimizing AGP transfer & aperture, Video Caching, IRQ polling and then maximizing all the settings in BIOS and OS Display Settings one at a time, but to no avail.

Which brings me here. Last stop shop before I RMA the board and wait for ATI?s next release. If I can get this here card workin? w/out sign of error ? I?ll be pleased as punch and keep it, but if there?s so much as a hiccup ? that?s enough reason for me to put $220+ toward a different animal.

Well, here is all I can tell you. I am doing care and feeding for 3 rigs I built recently which have retail 8500 ATi video cards. The 2 which run XP have the same lines as you described when you click the advanced tab. The W98se machine does not do it.

I have not looked into it any farther because the graphics are flawless.

I know that doesn't help you, but, I have seen what you described.

Yup - just removed the 9700 out of my 98se machine = no probs, like you said. DejaVu :D. I have half a mind to ignore the issue because the graphics - as you mentioned are absolutely superb. BUT, I can't help to think that it's indicative of a problem that will gradually worsen...

Hey, it DOES help to hear another person's experienced the same, even if an immediate solution isn't offered. Hmmm, happens in XP but not 98SE. I'll give 2000 Pro a shot tomorrow (err, today) and see if it's the NT Kernel in general or just XP.

Thanks 308nato.

I've been having the same problems with my 9500 in my xp machine. I was reading somewhere that's it could be caused by electrical interference. I ended up removing the card and replacing it and moved some wires around in the case. Haven't had a problem in two days.

You might try a different (earilier) version of the Catalysts.

Also I wouldn't trust the live updates from MSI and I'd manually download both the latest BIOS from MSI and the latest Hyperion drivers from Viaarena.

I downloaded the drivers to disk and gave it a shot - but no change. Haven't checked out "Hyperion" drivers yet - I'll take a look at those next.

Thanks BFG10K.

8500 and winxp here, does the same thing. Are you sure it's not something to do with that agpgart part of the drivers testign the settings of the card? Thats what I atributed it to anyways.

It's just a Windows XP thing. Since Windows XP is a relatively new OS the drivers for both ATI and nVidia are still not as fine-tuned as Windows 98/ME drivers yet.:)
