GPU going south?

Hi all,

So I just got my notebook back from repairs and went about updating the graphics drivers - my notebook has the Mobility Radeon 5850 inside. Then I ran HWInfo and right when I did that the computer screen went black with extreme flickering (although I could occasionally see the screen for about half a second before it went black again).

I restarted the notebook and it started doing the same on POST (although not as bad). Going into Windows via safe mode doesn't make a difference. However, when Windows finishes booting the screen will go completely black, then white, then red, then green, then display vertical grayscale bands, then horizontal grayscale bands without any flickering whatsover. Each color screen will show for about a second before showing the next color, then repeat the cycle.

I know I can just take it back to the shop as it's still under warranty but I live in an island far away and just the thought of going back is tiring.

So my question is: is the graphics card going south? Could it for any reason be related to the drivers (although I don't think so since the card is exhibiting the same flickering before the Windows drivers load)? If it's possibly software related then I'd try to resolve the issue before taking the trip back to the shop.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since it's happening before Windows even loads it's definitely a hardware issue. Time to take it back to the repair shop to have them fix it. I suppose it may just be the ribbon connector going between the board and the LCD panel is having issues but if not then they're going to have to replace the entire motherboard since the GPU in all likelihood is integrated into it.

Thanks guys for the advice. I guess I'll have to take the trip back to the shop (it's four hours to and back!) and start shopping for a new notebook. The one I currently have is almost three years old and I might as well sell it while I still can.

I'm betting the ribbon connecting the screen, as said before, isn't attached correctly... That's poor service on the shop...
