GPU downclocks itself

I have a GTX460 1gb Hawk edition. Whenever I go to play Skyrim, I start the game, the game works fine and runs butter smooth when the core clock is 925 mhz. But after a few seconds of being in the game, the screen kinda freezes a bit and then the core clock is at 710 mhz, which still makes it somewhat playable. But the thing is, sometimes it drops down to 410 mhz. Is there any reason for this?

Everything of the GPU is overvolted (core voltage, memory voltage and aux voltage) and the core clock is at 925 mhz, shader at 1850 mhz and the memory is at 2000mhz in MSI Afterburner.

Also sometimes, when I'm doing just everyday mainstream stuff like browsing the internet and such, nothing that stresses the gpu, not even flash videos, my screen just loses display and I have to hard reset the computer to get display back.

I don't have that game installed, but I will use Unigene for example.
Right click on desktop
Nvidia control panel
Go to program settings and find Skyrim where I selected unigene
change the power management mode to
prefer maximum performance
Do it on a game by game basis so that your gpu downclocks when web surfing etc

Can you give us the temps please. Seems like its overheating and thermal throttle is clocking it down. Try and reduce the voltage a small amount and watch the temps. If it runs close to hundred drop it another small bit. Around 90 on load you should be fine

Yeah, check temps before doing what Notty suggests. Sounds like it's possibly thermal throttling.

Get GPU-z if you don't have another way to monitor GPU temperature.

The temps always stay under 60 degrees. I'm sure that's cool enough. The thing is, when i started a GPU intensive app, it never reaches full 3d clocks. It only goes to 780mhz core clock or something like that.

When I do this, it still goes to 780 mhz and not the 925 mhz I set it at.
