i have a 4.3" garmin.
i bought a 5" garmin 1490LMT (Lifetime maps, traffic & bluetooth) for $129.

i bought it because i thought it has more resolution.

it doesnt. driving with it side by side they showed the same thing on the screen. :(

so when will the 5" versions have more resolution?

Android phones have the Google Navigation. It's pretty darn good especially with it being free with any android phone.

I'd have to agree. They built a bridge here and it just opened 2 months ago. It was added to google nav in less than 1 month. Most the time with my Garmin it would take 2 years.

Google nav app is good as long as you get signal for data. standalone gps will work anywhere it has map for

If you take a look at the current GPS offerings from Garmin there is essentially no difference between the models other than screen size. They could easily standardize to 4 models instead of 20.

If your phone is rooted you can install full maps and nav software of many choice. Free if willing to go warez.

But then the customer would be less confused!

dont have an android phone. still on an old 2007 winmobile 6.1 phone because my usage is about $10/month (prepaid).

but now that u mention it, i might just return the $129 GPS, buy a used android phone, and move up to a $12 plan that gives 10megs/month data.

suggestions on an android phone for gps?

I have CoPilot Live on my Android phone.

Its got the full European maps loaded up.

There really isnt any need for a stand alone GPS unit if you have a smartphone.

on the plus side, its FREE.

cant beat $10/month

Route66 is an offline GPS app.

I wonder if theres some way to send you an .ISO and the key. :hmm:

My suggestion is get a rooted EVO or Galaxy S touch on boost. $50 a month and down to $35 mo eventually - unlimited everything and unlimited tethering on sprint network - use googles nav.

My TomTom 720 sits in it charging cradle, unused. My phone, with Sygic Aura does all I need for GPS, better and easier.

The people that buy these things don't buy a larger screen so they can see more, they buy the larger screen so that they can see it better.

When Google updates their navigation to have this info, I'll stop using my standalone GPS.
http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/us/red-light-cameras

My GPS tells me "Caution: You are now approaching a red light camera" when I'm 600ft from the red light camera.
It also tells me "Mobile police radar ahead" when I'm 1,000ft from a speeding camera.

Until Google adds that feature to their maps, screw that. I will always carry my GPS in my hand when getting behind the wheel.
I haven't had a red light or speeding camera ticket in 5 years despite being in an area with loads of them.

Were you running red lights before hand?!

Nice on the speed traps though... cheaper than a $500 Escort 9500...
