Just saw a commercial for Text. Seems to target teenagers when they first get their car, and letting their "parents know where they are at all times". Oh, of course, there's also the usage for dogs....

What do you think?

I think it's an extreme invasion of privacy and wouldn't teach a teen or their parents a damn thing.

Can you use it to find any teenager?

If so, Dnor might be interested in this....

It is well within the right of the parents to issue such overbearing monitoring of their children, but they should be aware of the trust and likewise, expectation issues that could result.

Also fvking around with your dog by abandoning it in the woods for a few days would be cool.

I bet not a few teens would f*ks with their parents by detaching the GPS units and leaving them in say a strip joint or somewhere in skid row.

I wouldn't mind if my parents used it for me. All I want is a car to drive around in. As long as the car can get me from point A to point B, I'm fine. Them watching over me... what could I do? Drive to LA?

These will be obsolete in a few years when GPS chips can be implanted in your children at birth.

Implants on the person will me more useful seeing as how gas is $5/gallon and no one can afford to drive.

As long as the kid agrees with it, I don't see an issue.

Parent: ok, we can get you a car, but I am sticking a gsp tracker on there.
Kid: Cool, now my buddies can track me online!

Please remember it wont actually keep your kids safe.
It just lets police find the bodies easier.

You wanna make your kids more likely to survive this harsh, brutal world you would do better to toughen them up and enable them to deal with things.

I think it's awesome. I will definitely look into this when my kids are of driving age. If my parents had had something like this for my friends and me's cars when we were 16 perhaps we wouldn't all have been in accidents and be lucky to not have killed ourselves or others, as we were.

Great, so we find the body easier or find out the strange backwoods parking lot that the car was brought to, that's better than nothing.

There was a case about a year ago where a father was monitoring his kid's driving habits using GPS. The kid got a ticket for speeding & used GPS to prove he wasn't. It took two trials - the first, the GPS evidence was tossed out as unreliable & unproven. The 2nd trial, the expert who testified against the GPS, withdrew his previous comments and had come to the conclusion the GPS was indeed reliable enough & proved the kid wasn't speeding.

Meh, if the kid wants to use their parents car then they have to live with it. If they get their own car the parents shouldn't have any right to put it into their car (even if they pay for it and give it to them).

I saw a show once where a young teen was suing her parents for putting a tracking chip in her (think NYPD Blue in the future), and I thought about it myself. If my parents had done that to me I'd first start being disobedient, then escalate it while letting them know why I'm doing this, then I would burn their car without warning, if that didn't work when I get out of juvey I'd burn the house down and I'd let them know I'm going to do it first chance I get unless the chip is removed. Lose the chip or lose me.

Gas is now under $2.00 a gallon nationwide...

Bingo.

It's a pretty good idea. Rules are pretty simple to follow if they are laid out - no speeding, no going to such and such neighborhood or friends houses that are bad influences. The parent can lay down the rules and the kid can choose to follow them or not and punishment dealt out if they are not. With proof.

I disagree. Children deserve as much privacy from parents as they are mature enough to handle.

I saw that ad as a 'spy equipment for everyone' type deal.
Now I can track whoever I want, just attach it to the bottom of a car and track it all over the world. And I can pick one up at my local store !
Stalkers are going to love these.
