One of my biggest anxieties is losing my 2 cats or even the dog. Even though they're indoor, it just takes or some service person or someone else by accident to prop the door open and away they go.

Can GPS devices be implanted into pets nowadays? I've seen some collar devices on the web. anyone have any experience with them?

No experience here, but my understanding is that anything with live remote GPS/cell tracking requires a subscription. The other devices emit radio frequencies and work when you're in range to receive them. IMO, they're not really worth the expense if you can manage to secure your pet. Otherwise, my google-fu seems to turn up the trackers by POD, TAGG and Whistle most often.

I know of no implantable GPS devices at the moment.

GPS trackers aren't that tiny and the batteries don't last that long. Not something you'd want to put on a cat 24 hours a day.

You can do it the old fashioned way and give them a collar with your phone number on it.

Yeah, collar and ID tag. Ours are chipped too.

Chances are anybody who found 'em would call... right? Right?

I'm a n00b on GPS tech... what do geocaches use?

Are they just broadcasting a local radio signal?

Clues? I've never come across one with a homing beacon or anything like that.

Edit: Huh, apparently there are caches that use Chirp transmitters, which use NFC and/or radio frequencies I guess.

There are dog tracking devices that use radio frequency, like the Marco Polo, and Garmin.

They're not broadcasting anything. The lat/long coordinates and maybe a photo are posted online, you use your GPS to find the thing.

You can always put a APRS transmitter lol. But you need a ham license.

Something cellular based could work too but would require a subscription to a cell service.

A single 18650 cell would go a long way on such a device, but thing is you still need to charge it regularly, though I know some watches actually self charge based on body movement, wonder if such circuitry could be added to a device too. I don't imagine it generates enough power though. Watches don't use much power.

You have to be very careful with collars as cats like to jump fences like a criminal in the show COPS. The collar can get held up on the fence and they will choke to death.

The best solution I think you could deploy would be an invisible electric fence perimeter around your house or back yard. Or go cheap, use a break away collar with your tags of Info. and chip them.

not necessarily if it's a purebreed and you're in a sketchy area.

If it's an old dog I doubt they'd steal it though.

You should just chip your animals, get them collars with the phone number and name, and stop worrying. They usually don't go far anyway unless you have a hunting dog.

iv'e also attached a gps tracker on my dog (S.husky) and im using Trackimo's 3G device. i know its not necessary to attach a GPS tracker on pets but since my dog is not properly trained, so for safety i have decided to attach a tracker so i can monitor him anytime.

This seems promising....

https://www.thetrackr.com

oopss...I missed this part:

If your item goes missing, the TrackR app records its last known location on a map. When another TrackR app user comes within Bluetooth range of your lost item, its location will be automatically updated in your app.
