i was looking into getting a GPS system and was wondering if they had any additional fees. Do GPS units typically work out of the box or does it require an activation fee and monthly charge.

I'm pretty sure they work out of the box, you don't need a subscription or anything.

No fees for the use of the GPS signals, as to mapping services that could be another story...

I currently have a Magellan Meridan Platinum and an older Magellan 315, both of these are hand held units.

Any ideas of which system you are looking at.

i'm just going to use the system to record fishing locations. so i doubt any mapping would be needed.

Usually with a mapping capable GPSr you only buy the map once, at least that's the way it is with my Magellan. I purchased the Magellan Canadian map and also the Magellan worldwide base map.
