GPS recommendations?

Bought a TomTom One 3rd edition last December and am appalled at the lack of upgradability. I had to upgrade the maps within 30 days of "starting to use it" (how do they know that? They want the receipt), or else pay $60 for new maps... for a $150 GPS.

Am I being unreasonable or is that exorbitant?

Can anyone recommend a decent GPS that will provide free (or at least cheap? <$20?) upgrades to their maps?

I have no problem paying for the unit but have a hard time paying that much for replacement maps.

If the units are <cough cough> "user-friendly" for firmware updates, etc., all the better.

You didn't have to upgrade the maps, you were given the option to. Basically they said there are new maps available for your device, if you have purchased it within the last 30 days we'll give you a free upgrade. Kind of how computer software works.

How do they know how old your GPS is? It saves the first time it aquired a satelite lock.

This is how all consumer GPS units work, and $60 is what everybody charges. Remember there are only two map makers.

Unless you're a GPS geek, I really see no purpose in upgrading maps. There is very little change from year to year, and by the time the changes build up enough to be significant you'll have new GPS.
