GPS on a plane

I turned on my garmin gps receiver on the plane (airtran), after a while got some satellites, and got location and speed. I was told to turn it off since it could interfere with navigation. That dosent make much sense to me, since it receives signals, it dosent really transmit much, other than perhaps set up links with satellites. I remember taking my gps recently on a different carrier and there were no issues then. It is cool seeing 463 mph as the fastest speed recorded on the GPS 😀

you could of crashed the plane or caused it to end up in Russia...that is very dangerous.

and please turn off your GPSand cell phone in the hospital to...it could set off the fire alarms

😕

surprised the onboard marshall didn't tackle you. 😛 I seriously doubt it would do anything, hell they have gps in the cockpit.

Flight attendants tell you to turn off anything they don't recognize, regardless if it actually would interfere or not.

Yup, my dad uses a handheld GPS as a backup in his 4-seater, they won't screw anything up.

is there always an onboard marshall?

*pops his head up and looks around suspiciously*

I think they just do it as precaution and more or less the safety of the airline. If something DOES go wrong, you won't have clueless company execs trying to blame the staff for not telling people to turn off electronic devices.

Kinda like the gas bar cell phone thing. They tell you to turn it off dispite the myth being busted.

Aircraft use specialized GPS's that gather their information from unique flight-safe signals. All portable units collect the data from a different, non-safe source. To turn a portable GPS on while in flight, causes hazardous emanations to be attracted towards, and then pass throught the aircraft's windows. Spurious signal reflections can then continue to bounce around the interior, potentially wreaking havoc with the onboard electronics. A retired astronaut and current Boeing pilot verified this in a tabloid magazine article from 1997.

Sarcasm meter kerploded.

In some of the newer private jets they have lcd tvs that display the gps maps and location of the plane.

go on a nice carrier like asiana and they wont tell you to turn off anything. just like tsa with their ridiculous draconian policies.. it wont harm anything

Someone needs to invent a nail clipper that has a built in GPS. Just for the purpose of bringing on a plane to see what happens.

Sorry but don't blame TSA on thisone - I know for a fact that you can use them on Southwest planes, their little booklet had them in the safe section.
