I'm looking at the Nokia E51 because it has wifi and is touted as being a pretty good business phone. I'll be using it with ATT, but I don't want to may extra for a data plan.

Without a data plan can the Nokia Maps still work? To my understanding, GPS does not really require a "service" so if I went to Nokia's website and downloaded updated software/maps, could I see myself on a map as if I was online on google maps or something? I worry because on Nokia's website it says something about your cell phone service provider might charge you for data transfers...

Google maps requires data afaik. With Nokia maps you can download map data for an area ahead of time on your PC and transfer it to the phone.

Yeah I'm hoping that Nokia maps will just have a map overlay of the GPS position of the phone. That would be a perfect and inexpensive setup.

The nokia maps application isn't bad. It functions similar to a google maps.

i'm using hp 6945 which has stand alone gps receiver. works just like gps device alone. You can still receive phone calls while navigating. The only things I don't like about it is the size and battery life.
