GPS Navigator gadget

I am thinking of getting my Aunt a GPS navigator system for Xmas. She mentioned she was thinking of one and I thought, the perfect idea. Do they require a subscription of any sort to make normal use of it?

Some offer updates to the maps via subscription, some include it for free. The ones that give live traffic usually require a sub for that, but for simple directions no sub required.
