GPS maps Garmin vs third party vs open source

Anyone have any experience with third party or open source maps? Our garmin 1370 has done well for us in Europe but doesn't include Australia and Garmin wants $160 for the maps so thats out as an option. Looks like third parties come in around $45 while the open source ones are free.

We have Sprint for a carrier and while we've done sim cards before Sprint doesn't always make this a smooth process plus I suspect signal may be problematic in some parts of Oz.

I use Osmand/Openstreetmap. Not as good as google, but it gets me where I need to go.

Yeah +1 for Here Maps. Also check out Navmii....

I think those are the best two for offline free maps....

Google Maps has offline support which is decent but Here & Navfree offer complete offline experience.
