Is there any share ware topographical maps for windows that can interface with my garmin etrex legend. I g don't want to pony up the $85 for the garmin mapsource topo right now. Looking for something that can track my travels through the mountains n such and show me where I am on a topo map with elevation lines and all that good stuff.

Try here. Less tha Garmin's stuff, but you still gotta pay. I'll keep looking. I have a Garmin and I found some software for that kind of stuff, I just gotta find it again. Hold on.

Also looking for the same thing.

Tried Expert GPS; it had the perfect map but wouldn't upload to the Garmin Legend.

Not good for uploading maps, but if you haven't tried QuakeMap you'll thank me later. It's absolutely great for checking out where you've been and establishing waypoints and stuff. Automatically downloads the topo and aerial imagery anywhere in the US. Cool software.

As for the maps, I'm with you man. I have an I-Finder by Lowrance and don't want to take a chance on their $100 mapping suite.

QuakeMap is pretty good for the US. You can put recorded tracks and Photos into QuakeMap, then it will display the pictures at the lat/long. You might want to check out the 'GPS Units and Software' forum over at groundspeak.com

The maps from Garmin are really the only maps uploadable to your unit. Some software around for creating your own maps but it requires a lot of work.
