GPS In Dash Navigation System....

You're pretty much screwed with that dash. Nothing in the aftermarket will work without some serious modifications to the dash.

Most indash nav units are double DIN (7" wide x 4.22" high) in design although there are a few that are single DIN (7"x2.11"). If your dash won't allow for a double DIN unit you may still be able to fit a single DIN. The problem with single DIN units is that the screen needs to fold out and fold back in every time you start and stop your car. On some cars the screen when folded out blocks other things on the dash (AC controls, AC vents..ect).

I'm not sure how your dash looks like but you can try consulting with crutchfield and see what they have. They have a pretty good database on what will fit into many cars and provide dash kits if available for your car.

Clearly you haven't seen a picture of the dash on his car.

I was afraid that was going to be my answer. I guess I will just have to go with a nuvi. Thanks for your help.

It looks like you could fit in a double din unit in there.

Any ideas which double din unit I could fit and where I could pick it up?

I have the Pioneer Z1 myself. So I'll suggest that first. I would also check out Alpine units and Eclipse units. You'll need to take it in somewhere to see if they could fit a doubledin nav in there. Most places will let you know for free. Take it to a place that does custom work though, not a Frys/BB/CC/etc.

you could fit a single din with a popout screen.. pioneer has a new model out. i would just use a nuvi and stick it somewhere on that center console, though

i think a double-din could work in that space. it looks double-din already. the thing to do is go to crutchfield.com, select your car, start looking for radios with NAV systems in them, and see what fits your car. 🙂 even if you don't buy from them, you know what to look for when you go to circuit city. there will be advantages and disadvantages to doing NAV this way. it will be easier to deal with on a daily basis, but you won't have the option of stowing it all away in the glove-box when you park in a shady area. you'll always have that $1000 stereo screaming "steal me!"

Fit it in where? Did you notice that half the radio controls are in the center of the console below the screen up on top of the dash?

My wife's Lexus IS250 has this problem. The HVAC/stereo controls are all integrated into one big unit in the dash. Either you buy the car with NAV from the factory or you're screwed. We ended up buying a portable one for $350.

Oh, I thought all that sh!t was for the A/C etc.

well the bigger problem for the s40 is that there is no 'behind' to that aluminum plate....its free space behind there, so any aftermarket unit is gonna just hang in space and look pretty odd....
