GPS Experts? MINI Cooper Tracking?!

Howdy,

I was hoping to find suggestions for securing our new MINI via a GPS-type trackable device/system. ==> This will provide peace of mind & save me some 30% on the insurance premiums! 😎

The GPS add-on system for the DeLL AXIM will not accomplish the task alone, - as it's for use in mapping, rather than able to reveal its' "live" location. 😉

I was recommended this fine UK service, Map A Mobile , which utilizes the SIM card technology within mobiles, but I haven't found a comparable U.S. service.

Or... is it better to grab a cheaper, pay-per-use mobile, then locate a sevice comparable to the UK one?[/b]

Or... Are there alternative hardware/applications to consider?

Open to suggestions!!

Well, golly, I'm so sorry.

Don't you have other things to do?

As for the thread...we have a similar system here in Israel, but it is designed for cars in the first place, as a kind of quiet alarm to know where your vehicle is heading. Like LoJack, heh. A LOT of people install it. Remember it is not a GPS unit, you're not doing anything with it. The police does.

Thanks for the linky Joony! I've looked into it, - pricy, but what I want.

I don't need GPS, rather, an effective means of tracking the vehicle once/if stolen. Leaving it up to the police to operate is just fine.

Thanks also, Harabecw.

After looking into things further, I have no desire for GPS locating, just a cheap, effective way to track the vehicle...

European & UK areas can purchase a very cheap cell phone, plug it into the car lighter (possibly hidden), then sign-on for services which track the cell phone's SIM card for approx. $45/year. ==> That's it, - done! You're saving 30% on insurance premiums/year.

The U.S. doesn't yet offer the SIM card-tracking abilities, apparently. Thus, LOJACK & such GPS systems seem the only viable option. 🙁

I was hoping the Tech knowledge & effecient creativity of those here [sans the superb "shminu"] would perhaps offer workable alternatives.

Thanks too, AnandTech Moderator!
