I am in the market to purchase a reasonable portable GPS for all my traveling for work. I will be driving from Dallas to Houston this next week, and not knowing ANYTHING about Houston, I figured now is the right time for me to buy one.

What do you guys recommend in the sub/par $100 range? I would like to have the following features:

* 4.3" Screen
* Reads me streets and turn by turn (instead of "turn in 10 feet" but doesnt tell me what street)
* Free or CHEAP map updates
* Touchscreen (aren't they all?)
* Traffic Updates

I appreciate all the help I can get on this!

Target will have a Garmin & a Tom Tom on sale starting tomorrow, but I'm not sure what models. They also were clearing out the XL 340S (I think ) Tom Toms. If you can find one, it will do all you want except for traffic. It can do traffic, but you will need the optional RDS-TMC receiver.

Garmin uses Navteq. Tom Tom uses TeleNav. Navteq is better in USA/NA. In Europe or Asia I would get Tom Tom, but in the US stick to Garmin.

I would get the Garmin 255 or 265WT. If you have a little more cash get the 765T. I really despise the ultra low end Tom Toms.
