For some reason my tom tom is just plain awful mapping through the streets of NYC. The maps are complete (no missing streets, etc.) but the routes are very indirect, meaning it turns what should be a 5 mile trip into a 8 mile one with unnecessary turns and double backs. Any suggestions on a replacement?

What you mean is best routing. You said your TomToy has complete maps but it's routing sucks. As moose said Garmin is the best at that.

You have to consider, that with NYC (mainly Manhattan) there are many regulations as to where you can turn (especially Left), when you can turn and also a bunch of one way streets to contend with. So what you think might be the easiest, may not be from a legal standpoint. This is especially true in the midtown corridor area of Manhattan.

Yeah, I had a Garmin in NYC. It sucked. There are so many buildings that it sometimes thinks you are on the next street over.

Garmin is the best, but they are not cheap. I can also say that Garmin is a top notch company, they treat their employees extremely well and still manufacture their non-consumer grade stuff in Kansas. (I got a job offer from them, but ended up going with another company)

here are so many buildings that it sometimes thinks you are on the next street over.
Nearly all consumer GPS devices suffer from this problem.

Garmin. My dad has a first gen nuvi and loves it, he has used and abused that thing so much for work and it still works good. I bought him the Garmin 3790LMT for Christmas this year, that thing is slick and I am a bit jealous lol.

I use google maps on my smart phone... Yea, sometimes it tells me to turn into buildings, and I'm not in a place like NYC, but hey it's free : )

Nearly all consumer GPS devices suffer from this problem.

The more (very) expensive units like the Oregon 450 and 62s (?) should function better, but they don't come preloaded with street maps (~$60). They better though with an antenna the size of a cinder block... I want one.
