gpedit.msc problem in xp

I was using gpedit.msc when xp crashed due to a failure in a program. Now when I run gpedit.msc I get an error: "Failed to open the Group Policy Object.... The system cannot find the specified path." I tried several things including a reinstall over the current install. Does anyone have a suggestion?
