Horizontal. Where is your power brick? Where is it placed? Mine is on the floor behind the entertainment center. It actually sits up off the floor about an inch because it's sitting on some coiled power cable.

I have run my 360 for 10 hours once and that was a launch unit, never a issue.

Mine was completely separate from anything else and well ventilated

Same. Just keep it well ventilated and you should have no problems.

I've been running GoW pretty hard on mine between single-player and multi-player and I've had nary a freeze-up.

I wouldn't mind if it did though. :D My launch 360 can get pretty loud. I got my wife a 360 a month or so ago and it is quiet in comparison.

i was thinking of picking one of the 360s up instead of buying a hd-dvd player since the price is pretty = and i can game some console type games like the sports or racing, anybody know how it handles movies - like heat which is 2:50?

It's a rarity that this happens. You know, there are PCs that will overheat as well, so it's not just a 360 related problem.

but it is very easy to fix with a pc....

Seriously, you don't haave to worry about playing GoW or any game.

The game is NOT killing your 360 or anyone elses. Go to xbox.com and read their forums. every time a game comes out, you see posts saying that that game killed their 360.

The game just happened to be in your 360 when it failed, that is all.
I have played many 4+ hour sessions on my 360 that I bought in May. Sometimes even longer than that. Sometimes I've had the 360 running with GoW or R6 running (though not constantly playing, leave the game running in the menus while I go somewhere or eat or whatever) for as long as 8+ hours.

I have had no problems with the 360 whatsoever. I never worry about leaving it on or about it dying. I use it like any other console I've owned and it has performed flawlessly.

I understand that there are a lot of them dying, but there are MANY more that AREN'T. .

Hopefully MS gets these problems fixed ASAP.

my 360 gouged a huge concentric circle into my GoW

but tesco replaced GoW no questions asked, i just told em it didnt work. i guess having non-tech savvy women on the customer service desk is to thank

i modded my 360 after that, because apparently moving or knocking the console while its on will damage the discs (why no other DVD drive does this i dont know) . i added foam bump stops to the lid of the DVD drive.

Well it's easy to see the mistakes they made when you start looking into the 360. The processor is rated at 3.2Ghz, I believe. And the GPU is supposed to be equivalent of a 6600/lowend 6800. There are two 60mm fans on the back of the console, the GPU has a small aluminum heatsink on it and the CPU has a medium sized aluminum/copper heatsink with pipes for cooling. So I can see where this thing can have a tendency to get hot if used for an extended period. I've ran one without the case and the GPU heatsnk was very hot to the touch. Still no excuse for its poor performance though. M$ should have put a little more thought into the cooling system.

the GPU is much more than a 6600/6800 i believe. though its that radically different to those im not sure a direct comparison can be made. it has 48 unified shaders and uses a tile based rendering technique so that it can render games at 720p with at least 2xAA for free and 4xAA for 95% of the performance of 2x

a full 720p image will not fit in the 10mb of eDRAM on the xenos chip. apparently images are split into 3 big tiles or more.

having opened up my 360 and looked inside its no wonder they over heat quick if you have them stuff in cabinets. the HS on the ATi chip is passive and shares ducting with the also Passive CPU HS which uses Heat pipes. then 2 60mm fans are the sole source of air flow and despite all the holes in the case, there isnt actually that much vent space to let cool air in. i dont think its a very good design, but it works if you keep the console fed with fresh cool air.

having seen images of a PS3 taken apart and from what ive heard, the PS3's cooling solution is much better engineered and supposedly keeps the PS3 cooler and quieter than the 360

looked well engineered from what i saw so long as the one big squirril cage fan that cools it doesnt die

I got me a X-Box 360 premium console this past weekend and I also bought Gears of Wars and I played the ****** out of that game... once even 12 hours straight non stop running of gears of war. Of course I stopped to eat, drink, etc. but my console stayed running while I was doing those things. My 360 has not had any problems at all. Now my TV that is a different story... being made in 1993 (Sony Trinitron) very rarely the TV colors flicker but only happens like once in a blue moon.

FWIW I have a launch unit and haven't had a problem with a single game ever....and I've put a lot of time into my 360.

Make sure not only the system itself is well ventilated but the power brick also. Also try a different power bar or try plugging it directly into the wall and see if the red lights go away. Oftentimes "dirty" power can cause the red lights error.

Ditto. No problems here with a launch system. My 360 sits on an entertainment center shelf that is open on all sides. Excellent ventilation = flawless operation

mines raised up on little feet and so is the power brick. they are placed pretty much under an open window (2nd floor) and its winter here so cool air is plentiful

The 360 GPU is an ATI design for starters and is at least two generations ahead of Nvidia's 6600/6800 design.

There have been issues with PS3s locking up from overheating as well.

My 360 had a big sticker on the console that stated NOT to move the console with a disc inside it or with it on... rather funny that you mention it LoL
