Govt: No Real ID card, no airplane travel.

WASHINGTON ? Millions of residents of three states will soon face tougher and longer screening at airport checkpoints if their governors defy a federal law requiring new, more-secure driver's licenses.

Maine, New Hampshire and South Carolina have until March 31 to say whether they plan to comply with the law, which they say is costly and will inconvenience residents by forcing them to get new licenses.

If the states don't comply, the Homeland Security Department will bar travelers from using those state's licenses and ID cards to board airplanes starting May 11.

"We are not bluffing," department spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said.

Some fear massive confusion and delays at the 15 airports in the three states. Passengers showing unacceptable licenses will be pulled aside for additional screening, possibly including pat-downs.

"It would create havoc," said Harrison Rearden of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport board in South Carolina's capital.
...
So, don't get the new RFID chipped cards, and you'll no longer be able to fly. You will also be pulled aside, screened and searched because your ID isn't new? Is it me or is this just absurd? They are basically saying, "Don't do this or we'll hassle you until you do." Don't have a new ID and you are automatically labeled a suspicious person and possibly a terrorist. Is this a path to make state ID's useless, nationally?

Also the fact that somehow, updated ID's make you less of a terrorist is beyond me. I never saw the importance of of the Real ID act. We already have ID's. Thoughts?

What is funny is that while those three states are the only ones that are publicly defying the REAL ID law, there are scores of other states that are doing the same, but in a less confrontational way.

States like Oklahoma, that strongly oppose REAL ID, have asked for a compliance "extension", which gives the states until the end of 2009 to implement REAL ID. Any state asking for an extension is NOT required to actually implement REAL ID, and they can opt-out of the extension at any time. My state is doing the same thing as OK; my state legislators have shown strong opposition to REAL ID, but they have asked for an extension anyway so Homeland Security doesn't put out bad press on them.

REAL ID is complete, utter, total bulls**t and I will resist getting one as long as humanly possible. If that means a few more minutes of screenings and pat-downs at the airports, so be it.

Americans deserved TSA and these procedures done to us, because we let them. Just don't complaint, because this is the will of the people for better or worse.

They are NOT not being permitted to fly - the passenger will just get an extra look of two.
Then sent on the way.

The 9/11 hijackers had valid IDs. Real ID is useless. This country gets more and more ridiculous with each passing day.

The Feds are not going to shut down the population of 3 states from flying.

Also, all the other states are not going force their populations to switch over at the same time - it will be when the licenses expire.

Why are you spreading so much FUD over this issue? Your post has 2 inaccurate statements in it that you're putting out as truth...

So, don't get the new RFID chipped cards, and you'll no longer be able to fly.

NO requirement for RFID chips...YET. From your link:
2005 federal Real ID Act. That law set a May 11 deadline for states to issue tamper-resistant licenses that require proof of citizenship and address.

The next thing is in the 2nd part of that statement:
you'll no longer be able to fly

All this means is that without the proper ID, you may be subject to more scrutiny at the screening points...NOTHING has been said that you can't actually fly...YET...just that they want to be sure you actually are who you say you are.

Will this be a PITA for people in the affected states? I'm sure it will.

Is it worthy of all the FUD being spread? I don't think so...or not yet anyway.

(I support the concept of a national ID, but NOT with the RFID chip.)

Since a passport falls under REALID, how would this befuddle them? 😕

Papers please.

If you aren't doing anything wrong, and no one in your family has ever done anything wrong, and you didn't have a sign on your lawn for the guy who lost the last election, you have nothing to fear.

You are 100% correct. And finally they are enacting this.

Although some states do require that foreign license applicants be legal residents,2 many states do have such a requirement or do not thoroughly verify applicants' identities. Seven states don't even require a Social Security number (SSN) to get a state ID, or they will simply give applicants another number if they don't have an SSN

Actually, I would simply choose not to fly.

You aren't owned by the government, nor should you be.

Wow what happened to state's rights? Real ID FTL

What state rights are being taken away here?

Well lets see. The Airlines are NOT government operated. They are private companies, yet the government is dictating how the airlines operate.

Now if you are a citizen in a state that doesn't want to enact a federal id system, you are discriminated against.

I live in South Carolina but it won't affect me because I have military id. But I chose to have that life it wasn't forced. Real ID is forced compliance.

It is really no different than the blackmail the federal government used to increase the drinking age to 21.

State's rights do not exist anymore because if you don't do as the federal government wants, they will blackmail you into compliance. The federal government has forgotten that the states give them the power and at this point all the states need to take that power back and forced a limited federal government.

Nice try. Sure, airlines are private companies, but they are governed by the FAA, which, last time I checked, is federal. Get it?

I honestly dont understand why people dont have a problem with letting someone who cant really prove who he/she is get a drivers license or fly. I dont get it. Maybe someone can quit flaming and explain it.

eh? So the fact that I've been using my passport for all travel, not just out of country, for 15+ years and for other things that require ID means all along I've been "on my knees"? WTF are you saying here?

Perhaps you missed my post. The hijackers had valid ID. Who is this going to stop? All those homeless people who fly willy-nilly through our skies?

Nice try, and again only half the equation. Sure they had real ID's...that were obtained with fake documents. Do you take the opinion that if we cant stop 100% we shouldnt take steps to stop any of them? Is that your stand? It's no different thasn a car or home alarm system. It will stop 98%, but if someone REALLLY wants your car or inside your house, they'll get in. So whats your stance?
