How do you feel about a governed car? Would you buy one?

Hell no! And the first thing I do when I rent a uhaul is find the govenor and disable it 😉 Of course I have not rented one for a few years so they may have changed.

I don't even understand why they make cars go faster than 80 mph. The are only a few places in the US where you can legally go 80. Back in the 1980's cars topped out at 85 mph, what happened to those good ol days?

See the reason is so people don't go above 100MPH. Now does that make sense at all, the highest speed limit is 70 in the country.

Most USA bound European cars have a speed limiter. Generally it is 155 MPH but there are a few that are lower.

I'm going to speak out of my ass here, but I would venture to say that all cars are governored to *some* extent. Now whether is to protect you or the engine, or both is up to specific cars/brands.

I really see no reason why any person needs a car that will do faster than 100-115 MPH stock from the factory. I'd be willing to agree to have a governor of some sort put on my car that limited it to say, 90 MPH so long as I could get some sort of rebate back from my insurance company. That would probably never happen, so it's really sort of a moot point.

But anyway, for 99.9% of the population, I think that regulating a car to 100MPH wouldn't be a bad thing.

I know that an Alero is governed at 174kph. 🙂

Come out West pardner, we's have a speed limit of 75 if yunt to drive away from the cities.

It totally and absolutely depends on the car. There is no scale or set limit that all cars of a certain type go on. For instance a Maxima GXE is goverened to around 117 mph. The SE is either not governed or is incapable of hitting its speed govern (around 140-145).

I'm fairly sure there's laws that resticts speeds on vehicles based on wheelbase, engine size and vehicle weight. Also the "class" that the car is being introduced onto the market. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm sure I've heard that along the way in the past.

My 1993 subaru impreza is governed at redline (6000rpm), but that doesn't keep it from going 110+!
