Government uses of the computer...

Hi,
I have to write an essay for english on the uses of computers in the govt. in the 50s/60s vs. the uses of computers in the govt. today. I'm having some serious trouble finding what the government first used computers for. Can anyone help me out? It'd be greatly appreciated.

AFAIK, computers at first were only used to do complicated mathematical calculations, whereas they handle information in a much more universal way nowadays.

I've tried searching for everything dave, believe me, it's not easy. I've googled just about every combonation fo "history" , "government" , and "computers" there are.

Did you try "computing" instead of "computer" ? Also try "automation" and finally ENIAC was one of the first systems.

If I recall correctly one of the earliest uses was firing solutions for artillery batteries.

After that, possibly census calculations.

they used them to break codes in the wars i saw a video at my computer a+ class there was a whole bunch of info on it. really google can help you for sure

Yeah, Artillery computations. The british also used them to help break the enigma code, which might be worth looking up, even if the report is focused on the US.
