government hiring procedures

i'm wondering if anyone here knows government hiring procedures for apps recieved through usajobs.

my reason for asking is:

in most jobs, to even be considered for the job you have to be among the first applicants to have responded to the offer. (unless they're using a text search prog to sift apps, they arent gonna read more than 10-20 resumes before trashing the rest and selecting their top choices)

on usajobs, i understand that there's a window from post date to closing date, and from what i understand reading the site, apps arent even considered until the closing date. (am i right in this thinking?)

i'm currently trying to apply to pretty much every federal intern program job in the country that i qualify for. but i dont know which i should be aiming at? ones very close to closing, or ones way the hell out there?

do people get considered for the position before the closing date on the app?

I applied to one job on there a couple years back... took forever to reformat my resume and I never even got an acknowledgment that they received my resume, much less a call back.

that's not a particularly helpful reply 😉

what i've been doing thus far is using their resume builder, i redid my resume in their system. i also upload a pdf of my current resume with every job app, along with an unofficial copy of my college transcript.

out of the 13 i've applied to, 3 have cleared their close date. i've recieved 1 email saying that i was tentatively qualified for the position, but it also included "this is not a job offer". thus, i think they didnt send out rejections with that.

in fact, the only response/rejection i've ever recieved from the 40 or so apps i've sent out in total has been from a geico internship program.

PM Marlin1975. I know he does some hiring/filtering for jobs that come through there for his department. He should be able to help.

I read that sometimes when there's only 1 vacancy the agency already has someone in mind as is only posting the job as a procedure only.

I applied for a job and waited 3 months before the interview.

Sometimes when you apply you get redirected to another website to complete the application. Other times, you apply directly through the website.

A lot of the jobs are scored on a point basis and only the highest scoring applications are then forwarded to the hiring manager.

a depressing thought.

granted... most jobs go through applicationmanager.gov, but some military branches and such have their own application managers. i know army requires a separate system, and i had to make an account there based off SSN to apply to army civvy jobs.

that's just a granted 😛 i'm mostly concerned about the timing.

I remember it took almost a year before I landed my state job. I took the test and waited about a year while I was in school. I did get a call from them after about 6 months, but the shift they wanted me to work on would not work. When I got a call back from them 6 months later I was in my final month of school, so I talked with the dean and he said that I could forego the final month of my Friday night classes. Just so happened to be a class on landing a job!

I'd say just spam the hell out of whatever internship you come across there. Also don't forget your state government listings for job postings. Spam the hell out of them too. The Shotgun method works great.

Government hiring works as you said: the hiring agency doesn't get the resumes until the posting is closed. If you are the only person who is qualified for the job and meet all the requirements, you will not necessarily be hired. If you are the only qualified person who applies for the job, you will not necessarily be hired. In both cases, it is likely that the job will be reposted with some small changes to the posting. Three months and three posting/application cycles later, you might finally get the job. Maybe. Then you will realize that the government is slow as hell and you might not even want it anymore. 😛

Sounds like a crapshoot from what you are all saying. I guess i should just apply like crazy and get 'er done.

Ditto for me. I actually made several tailored resumes for different fields. Applied for a crapload of jobs. Never once got an acknowledgement.

Fuck em.
