Cooked a fine meal with my fiance last night:

Grilled fresh coho salmon straight from Alaska with Salt, white/black pepper, butter, terragon: $7 - We both had massive pieces of fish. YUM!!!
Bottle of '03 Rosemount Shiraz/Cabirnet blend: $2 🙂 (bought a whole case of this stuff at $2/bottle)
Corn on the cob: $.10 per ear (x3)
Black beans and rice: Free (was a gift)

Total: $9.30; 4.65 per person. 😀

Coho salmon rocks. Cheap food rocks. Note to self: don't drink wine while on Sudafed. 😕

The look on your face when she says she has a headache... Priceless! 😀

How the hell do you get black beans and rice as a gift??? 😕

kudos on j00r uB3r 1337 cooking skills though...is coho salmon a river fish or an ocean fish? If its Alaskan salmon, then its NOT farm-raised...correct?

I think the black beans and rice was one of those "gourmet" dealey-o's....accepted as gifts worldwide. 😉

Coho "Silver" salmon is both a river fish and an ocean fish. They are born in the streams (fresh water) then live/feed in the ocean for the next 3-4 years (time varies for each salmon species) of their life. When the right time comes, they suddenly know they are supposed to return to the exact stream they came from to spawn. They then die. Salmon are amazing! They are one of the only fish in the world that can live in both fresh and salt water.

This guy was wild, not farm raised. If you've never had wild, Alaskan salmon (coho, sockeye, chinook), you need to experience this. It is FAR superior to farm raised. The flesh on farm raised salmon is orange. Wild coho and sockeye will have blood red colored flesh. Chinook ("king") will have a bit lighter shade of red and are quite oily. In terms of eating, most prefer sockeye>coho>chinook. Chum and pink salmon are considered "dog food" in Alaska, although both are not bad at all. Seeing fresh coho or sockeye at my local grocery store here in Minnesota makes me VERY happy. 🙂
