So my daughter's done the whole routine of getting a driver's license up til now. All the hours, all the sessions w/ a privately paid driver's training co, the practicing, etc. etc.

After months of waiting, we finally get to D-Day and she gets to the DMV only to have them tell her (my wife, actually) that they need 1 more form that we sent waaaaaay back during the permit phase which goes to insurance saying we "accept" her as being on our insurance.

My wife calls me saying, "Well, no test today!"

I said, "Bullsh!t, I'm sending those forms to your phone right now, about-face & hop to it!" (edit: DMV b!tch said she wouldn't accept the form on her phone! WTF? Good enough for a cop, but not DMV?)

Needless to say, after I've got the wife pretty worked up, she had already caved at the counter when they told her unless she could produce the form right now (I offered to even drive it down from work) that they would have to reschedule. (I demanded she don't take "no" for an answer)

Anywho.....wife & daughter caved & are heading home. I'm contemplating driving down to that DMV & rearranging furniture as a recreational form of therapy.

I drive 45 minutes to do my DMV business in a nearby little town of 6,000. The clerks there are actually human and there's usually only two or three people doing business in the whole place. Better than waiting with dozens/hundreds in my local one and dealing with a-holes.
 
I was at the DMV yesterday...so your wife was one of "those" people I saw holding up everyone else, trying to argue their way around the fact that she didn't follow directions?
 
California DMV was the worst.

I just renewed my car registration here in Oregon online. Took me 5 minutes, lasts for 2 years, don't need to smog/DEQ where I'm at and it only cost $85 😀
 
The last time I was at the DMV I lost my place in line when I stepped out for a one-minute phone call. I had been there for hours, and it was all I could do to walk away instead of telling that cop to go fuck himself. I really should have just done it but this was Oklahoma and they still have a law on the books about cussing in front of women, and they have that problem enough that there are notices about it posted all over the DMV. Worst State Ever.

I just renewed my car registration here in California online. Took me less than 5 minutes. What's your point?

Renewed my driver license last year where I am required to take a new picture. Made my appointment, showed up at my appointment time and was out the door in less than 20 minutes. It's actually not too bad if people just plan ahead and make appointments.
 
Wow. The WORST experience I ever had at the CA DMV was to have to wait a couple of hours because I didn't make an appointment...otherwise, I brought the necessary forms and was in/out quickly.
Considering that the folks on the other side of the counter usually have to deal with a bunch of pissed off assholes like the OP, I'm usually pretty surprised that they have a decent attitude.

Here in Warshington, the various licensing agencies are independently owned/operated...you're dealing with private entities acting for the state. While that's odd to me...it seems to work. (although I've dealt with more rude employees than I ever did in California)

This. Your wife and daughter did not have the correct forms. Get over it. Go back when you have the correct paperwork. You holding up everyone else (who has the correct paperwork) is just stupid.


When I moved to IL, I went to the DMV to renew my license and they the forms I had weren't acceptable. You know what I did? I ask for a list of acceptable forms and then went home to try and find ones that fit. The next day, I went back and everything went very smoothly.

Before I moved to NJ I spent 10 minutes one day Googling and looking through the state's DMV site. My first and only trip to the DMV took all of 45 minutes. I walked out with a new license, new registration, new title, and new plates. Including the inspection and trip to the State Farm office to sign some paperwork, I spent maybe 2 hours total getting myself and my car 100% road legal in this state.

Unfortunately, I'm moving back to PA in a few weeks so I have to do it all over, and I'll have to get my car inspected annually again. :\

Yeah, I thought some of my military forms covered documents required, but I was wrong. =( I had to get other stuff before going back. It took a bit longer than 45 minutes though, because I had to take a written and driving test and wait behind like 30 people to get my license made.
 
It's not just California's DMV. Had a similar issue here in Texas. Wife and daughter drove 30 minutes so daughter could take her written exam for her learner's permit. All paperwork filled out. I signed it all and had utility bill with my name on it. Well, DMV would not allow my daughter to take the test because I was not there in person and my wife was not on the utility bill. There was ANOTHER form I had to fill out stating I was her father (SMH). Of course, no where on their website or in paperwork instructions do they mention this. Wife and daughter had to drive back for one stupid piece of paper.
 
Going to the licensing office for any reason is just a nightmare just about anywhere. When I went to get my full license, I got stuck in a major traffic jam on the way there. Accident on the highway. Was literally 1min late and the crusty old c--- at the counter told me I would have to pay another $70 and book another test at a later day. When I say 1min, I mean I was supposed to be there at 1pm and I literally showed up at 1:01pm. They weren't busy. Of course I was in university at the time and $70 to me was a lot of money. I flipped on the bitch and stormed out of there. Only time I've ever done that. Never been that mad at somebody in my life.

So my dad found out, phoned the office and goes on one of his half hour long anti-civil servant tirades on them. There's no hatred you develop quite like that for government employees when you have to work with them on a daily basis. Most of the stereotypes are true. Guess he freaked them out enough. So I ended up getting to take the test at a different office at no additional charge. They were a lot nicer there and I passed easily.

The nice thing now is you can renew your plates online and they mail the stickers out to you. So I only really need to go to the office every five years when I need to get new pictures for my license.

To me it sounds like the application was missing dad's signature, and he knew he just ruined his little girl's big day:

What any smart person would have done was say "Oh, my husband is out in the parking lot, ill go have him sign it real fast..."

PG nailed it! Better yet, the form wasn't for them. We were only required proof of insurance per DMV instructions. Somehow, they decided they needed this "inclusion" form which was for the insurance company, NOT the DMV, state, county or othewise. I'm still not sold, but the wife already folded like an accordian.

Well, you did get one part right.....she *should* have. Again, the form wasn't form them anyway, but I had it scanned in my e-mail already & still they wouldn't accept it. I offered to drive it down.....no joy.

Oh and......you're an OCGuy......You've got bigger problems than the local DMV. 😉 (P.S. OP was hours ago, not days)
