It's a facet of The Grand Delusion.

Republicans campaign only on taxes, spending, regulation, and the economy... only to govern on trying to legislate their morality. Democrats campaign on protecting "the middle class", and fixing health care and education... only to govern on taxing and spending us to oblivion.

The Grand Delusion: We like to believe that the Republicans only want to curb taxes, spending, and fix the economy and that Democrats only want to truly fix other problems instead of blowing up the size and cost of government... and Tea Party candidates and Republican talking points this election cycle further guide us toward The Grand Delusion like moths to the flame, but then we sober up and realize the horrible truth: they all dance with the ones that brung them.

There are Republicans who want to legislate their morality at the expense of others' freedoms and there are Democrats who like big government and crushing regulation. They're the ones pulling the strings. They're the dance partners that, in the interest of political expediency, cannot be ignored.

We all lose.

Duh. This is not new news. You either play the game or get booted out. They who control the money, control the power. Nothing ever changes.

Why didn't your beloved GOP take the senate? It certainly isn't because there is a shortage of rubes in WV.

Because they put up some weak candidates.. but even if they didn't, I'm not sure they would have taken control of the Senate. To expect +10 when only 30 or so were up for election is silly. Could have happened, but I don't think anyone would argue it was a ass kicking still.

Well, lets also not forget that the left wants to legislate their morality as well.

The current CA video game law in front of the Supreme Court is a fine example.

The left's authoritarian agenda has been FAR more successful than the religious right's. In fact, the Religious Right hasn't made any real headway in decades. At most, they've only stopped changes, but have affected none of their own.

You're really referring more to "populists", than "the left". Populists are often socially conservative Democrats. Those conservative views on social issues are, more often than not, rooted in religious beliefs.

Rabid environmentalism is a better example of authoritarians on "the left".

So? We must be vigilant against all authoritarian agendas, not dismissive of one because it hasn't been terribly successful.

NOM got Iowa to give the boot to 3 of their supreme court justices because of their ruling in favor of gay marriage, though. I'd count that as a success for the religious right.
