There was a football stampede that injured several dozen people at the state college a few years ago. I'd say the rate of fan injury, crime and death directly corresponds to the popularity of the sport.

I'm gonna have to go with the idea that it has to do with the cultural differences and the lack of 'evolution' with some cultures. Some people just don't get that we(many different races, cultures) all live here and will continue to do so for a long period of time. Look at almost any Winston Cup/Busch Race. More than a few speedways filled with 150,000+ people and this crap isn't happening. I believe as someone already stated it all has to do with religion/culture/politics. Not the sport or popularity of it.
