Gothic series any good?

Steam has the Gothic series on sale:

Gothic 2 Gold Edition $2.50 75% off
Gothic 3 $3.75, 75% off
Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods Enhanced Edition $2.50 75% off
Gothic 4 ArcaniA $12.50 75% off

Gothic Complete Pack (includes Gothic one which isn't on sale) for $18.75

Has anyone played these, and if so what do you think of them? I never played them so I'm wanting to hear from others.

Gothic is like Metallica. First album kicked ass, but they got progressively worse to the point of being completely mundane on the newest installment.

Gothic 1 was amazing for me. Really innovative, fun, open ended and raw.

Gothic 2 was really good. It had a big world and still had most of the elements which Gothic 1 had but it didn't really offer anything on top of that. It kinda began to be played out.

Gothic 3 was a technical disaster. Unplayable until the patch. But at least under the cover once you learned to deal with the bugs and avoid combat it was still a "Gothic" game with some open ended gameplay

Gothic 4 is like if you took Ice Cream, substituted the sugar for flour and then substituted the cream for water. What do you end up with? I dont know but it would probably taste bland with no depth and no thought and you'd want to just spit it out. It's almost a completely different game. It does not take anything that made Gothic so fun. It's like going from XCOM UFO Defence to XCOM Enforcer or whatever the FPS game based on XCOM was...

The short answer.. Yes

If you enjoy RPG's do yourself a favor and pick up the pack. Gothic 2 is my personal favorite, but Gothic 3 with the community package is also amazing. The G3 addon (Forsaken Gods) was just re-released with a massive patch as well. For less than $20 you'll be getting well over 100 hours worth of gameplay, and in actuality it's probably a lot more than that if you play through everything.

I enjoyed 2 a lot. Liked it better than Morrowind. It had sort of a single-player MMORPG feel to it (in a good way).

I picked up 3 in a bargain bin and patched it with the latest community patch, but I still haven't made it that far. Been meaning to go back and start up again.

Gothic 3 is fun once you get the latest patch as well as the outstanding community patch. Really worth playing. 8/10 with the patches

Gothic 4.....meh. But for $12.50 I'd go for it. It's way more lightweight than Gothic 3. 6.5/10

What kind of games do they compare to? Oblivion? Two Worlds? Something else?
I wouldn't really compare Gothic to those games so much. Gothic puts a lot more focus on the main quest, and mood of the world. Even a lot of the side quests are still related to something going on in the world at the time related to the main quest and events surrounding it, so they rarely pull you way off focus. In that sense, I'd compare it somewhat to The Witcher, but with Gothic being much more of an open world game, it is a very different beast over all.

Gothic 1 and 2 are a couple of my favorite games really, 3 is good after patching, but not quite up the previous entries. Gothic 4 was made after the original developer lost the Gothic name, and the new dev basically streamlined it to the extreme, and IMO it's crap.

For Gothic 2, is it better to play through the first time with the "vanilla" or "night of the raven" version?

Night of the Raven just offers a new set of quests and side story, I don't think it actually changes anything in the regular game beyond that. Probably best to play through it after you finish vanilla G2. At least that's what I did.

damn, I have so many games to play.

Edit: if you want to skip on Gothic 4, you can get the Gothic Universe Pack for $5.75 and then add Gothic 3: Forsaken God Enhanced Edition for another $2.50.

If you cooked it, it could be a flour tortilla?

But I guess you'd still be wanting some grilled meat and onions and hot sauce...

NotR adds an add-on world that's pretty cool. You get to be a pirate for a while.

Everything is more expensive when you play with the add-on. Thus items and skills take longer to aquire.

Be careful - If you want to go mage and have access to the higest level spells in the end you must put almost all of your skills into magic.

I wanna jump on this bundle but im not sure if gothic 4 is worth the 12.50

See CPA's note above:

Yeah, NotR does a lot of re balancing to the original Gothic 2 campaign, and I'd say it's for the better. So I'd play with it installed from the start.

I'm really tempted by this deal. I bought Gothic 3 when it was new and it was AWFUL. Buggiest game I've ever played in the modern era, bar none.

That said, I'm willing to give it another shot for that price, and with everyone saying the patches have fixed everything.

Here's my question though: With the STEAM version, will it require specific STEAM patches and whatnot? Will any mods and community updates work with it? I've heard everyone say the community patch on Gothic 3 makes it an excellent game...will that work with the STEAM version, even though it's not "official"?

The Gothic series for 18 dollars is a steal regardless of how good or bad Gothic 4 is. Unfortunately, I can't fully review G4 yet because I stopped playing it to play FO:New Vegas and haven't gotten back to it.

If Gothic 4 was the game with the WoW-style zones instead of an open world, then yea it is pretty rough, but I'll probably still beat and enjoy it.

G1, G2, and G3 are all awesome games though. I know some people bitch about G3 being buggy and as I recall, the biggest 'complaint' at release was that people were getting their asses handed to them by boars. However, I put about 300 hours into the game at release, before any patches and really enjoyed it. The world was huge and a lot of fun to explore. I'd rate at least G2 and G3 as better than Morrowind by comparison.

Nah, my issues (and apparently most people's) were mostly technical. The game just was laden with so many bugs upon release.
I even went back and found my thread I started when the game was new and I had just played several hours:

http://sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?t=291894&highlight=Gothic

I remember the "day/night cycle" glitch very well. It was actually quite humorous for awhile. I turn to the right, it's overcast and rainy. I turn to the left, and it's sunny and cloudless. Too bad most of the other bugs were game-ending. 🙁

Gothic 4 is not a bad game. Sure, it's not as indepth (or even close) to a fully patched Gothic 3 but I still enjoyed it. Just switch your brain off as there really isn't much in the way of building up your character (there's not even any attributes) and the quests are pretty mundane and cookie cutter. Oh, and the path is dead linear so you hardly do any exploring.

But it's still good for a run as the visuals are nice and the basic core gameplay fun enough. It's not really an RPG though. More action-adventure, a bit like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic for those that played it.

I purchased it early this morning off of Steam. It was at a great price. Visually looks great. Not a bad purchase I would say. Sure its not like the others in the series.

It will be an enjoyable run though.
