GotGame Launches Rogue, The First In-Game Web Browser
November 21, 2008, 9:00 AM

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- GotGame, the company that enables gamers to access the in-game content they desire, today launched Rogue, its highly anticipated web browser.

Gamers spend a quarter of their time in game waiting for teammates to log in or games to load. They want something to do during this downtime, but exiting or minimizing the game means missing critical action.

Rogue eliminates this waiting game, enabling PC gamers to surf the web via a fully functional web browser without ever leaving their favorite games. Players can navigate to Wowhead to obtain information about items in World of Warcraft, or pull up Hulu to watch movie clips between Counter-Strike rounds; these are just two of the countless options available.

In order to use Rogue, gamers simply visit rogue.gotgame.com and download the free application. By hitting a hotkey, users can overlay the application in their favorite games; the browser will appear as though it were a part of the game itself, without disrupting any in-game functionality.

You can see a video of Rogue in action on YouTube or GotGame Videos.

The application is optimized to impact the gaming experience as little as possible. Gamers can set the browser's transparency setting so the entire game screen is still visible, even if the browser is open. This means that they can, for instance, watch online videos overlaying their game at 50% transparency, while at the same time "grinding" for experience in Age of Conan.

Rogue's Notable Features:
-- Game overlay for Windows XP & Vista
-- Full CSS, Javascript, and Flash support
-- Hot key to open/hide browser when in game
-- Configurable transparency settings
-- Optimization toggle for faster/slower computers

Hope there's way to customize the hotkey, I use F12 for a number of things in CS:S... But really, this seems awesome. I've been wishing for this functionality for some time.../

if you can browse the web while 'playing' a game you can alt-tab. this is only useful for non-games like MMO's

That's a cool idea, but unless it lags less than just alt tabbing why bother? Can anyone report on this?

This could be useful for Civilization IV multiplayer, alt-tabbing is troublesome at times.

Alt-tabbing in Source games is a pain, and sometimes messes up the textures, so I was excited to try this out... then I loaded it in-game and my FPS TANKED. It went from 120+ to average 27... needless to say, I killed it immediately. Is anyone else getting this huge FPS drop?

Yea.

But if you're playing WoW or something, ideally you'll want to play in windowed mode anyway. Playing full screen is rather stupid.

Duh, because if you say something matter-of-factly enough, people automatically believe it.

Why? Simply because you're being more productive. There's more than once that there's a few minutes down time while you're traveling on a griffin or waiting for a boat (assuming you're still a fairly low level) and I can easily switch back and forth between a browser. Or, if you need to, you can look up something quickly on wowhead/wowwiki or whatever else.

Also, having wow in windowed mode is less troublesome if you have friends constantly IM'ing you. You don't have to keep alt tabbing.

Having it in windowed mode is just simply easier.

Some games stop loading when you alt-tab. BF2, for example (and that has damn long load times).

How do you control something on the second monitor while a game is running? I have a plasma tv set up with my pc, and I know that I can't control things on it while I have a game up. I still have to minimize it.

In Linux + wine, I just move my mouse to the edge of the screen, and it pops up on my second monitor.

Wouldn't that be bad for games? Like a fps when you want to turn left, you move the mouse quite a bit.

LOL @ "productivity" of IMing.

Both modes are acceptable forms of gaming for people, but to call playing in full-screen mode "stupid" is just, well, stupid. It takes one keystroke to minimize a game, or less to use dual monitors. If you spend more time flying, waiting around, or looking up quest information, then you're not playing a very exciting game.

Probably. You can always switch it off and require a key combo to "release" the mouse back to the desktop.

I rarely play shooters anymore, but why would you want to browse the web while fragging people?

EQ II has an in-game web browser.
Something like this would have been useful for EQ 1 players on those long camps.

For people asking how to use dual monitors and use your second display, you still have to have the game in window mode. For example in WoW or Left for Dead, they have Full Window mode (no borders). Basically, you still play the game maximized, but still have access to your second display without the need for minimizing.
