Got to give Gore credit. He's smooth. Real smooth.

During the flap over how much energy Gore uses, Gore retorted that it's OK because he buys "carbon offsets" to make up for the fact that his house uses as much energy in a month that the average house uses in a year. Well, where does Gore buy his "carbon offsets" from?

Link
Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe, she said.

So...Gore buys "carbon offsets" from a company he helped found and chairs to ease his conscience. That company uses that money to buy stocks in other companies. Meanwhile, Gore goes around the globe encouraging others to buy "carbon offsets"....through which he will receive a good bit of financial benefit.

Smoooooooooooooooth.

he is fighting global warming, not capitalism. everyone has the right to make a living.

his movie has taken more than 40 million at the box office, and all profits have been donated to charities.

At least he's preaching the right message. So he's got a lot more he could do to be more efficient himself - does that invalidate the message somehow, or just confirm that there's a problem?

No kidding. Who said being environmentally concious had to be exclusive of financial opportunity?

The fact is, there is a LOT of money to be made in alternative and renewable energy sources. Gore realizes it and has said as much himself.

So what's your point?

I think the point he's trying to make is that Gore is copping out. Instead of actually taking measures to reduce his consumption of electricity, he merely talks about "making up for it" by donating toward green-power projects. Although, the article did discuss his plans for modernizing his home in a more environmentally-friendly fashion.

Did anyone think Gore's interest in global warming was something other than profit and power?

How else would he sell it to the world and business? If he didn't include the money making aspect of it, half the people would be calling him a dirty hippy.

At least he isn't killing people for profit and power.

The point is more about carbon emissions than electricity consumption. It's a little bit of a red herring, IMO.

If sufficient amounts of energy are being produced by renewable, smart, alternative energy sources, the amount of consumption is a moot point, or at least secondary.

I would agree that if the energy Gore is using is produced by carbon-emitting technologies, he's walking a fine line, even if he is offsetting it. However, I don't think the information released in the article the other day bothered to state where he buys the energy his home produces. Or if his offsets are indirectly covering carbon-based enery usage.

This also says nothing about what the electricity is used for. If he's running a farm, which I believe is done on his property, then that's understably different than your average American suburban home. Point being: a lot of assumptions and not enough facts.

All that said, why isn't this in P&N?

I'd like to see the actual figures (though we never will). Profit is a tricky term in the movie business and I know the distributor isn't giving up much of their percentage.

If he was serious about going "green", he'd be pushing for new nuclear power plants.

Funny how people who oppose the message of the film, inevitably cite money and power as being reprehensible.

Does anyone think change can be truly realized without a lot of power and even more money?

People also dredge up the bogey-man of Clinton. Is Bush any more defensible?

QFT. I'd like to know why we've become a country that has the mindset, "You're either with us or against us." It's very counter-productive and only leads to fear, hatred or at the very least stagnation.
