i bought the planet earth dvd set from amazon marketplace, and i think its a fake.

reasons:
1. no mention of region coding, and dvddecrypter tells me it is all regions, with no CSS.
2. when i pop in the disc into the drive, the label is E2938 (2 is e2938_dvd9, and disc 5 is disc5_dvd9).
3. the picture on the back cover does not match the picture on amazon
4. minor typo in the back cover, someone's name was not capitalized (penny Allen)
5. there are these weird rings of rubber cement type stuff on the inner ring of bottoms of the disks.
6. when you flip over the disk and read the stuff imprinted on the ring, it says "Planet Earth (2)" and nothing else. my other dvds have weird codes and bar codes on them.

if you have the real set, can you mind checking for region coding and the disc label?

Should i give the seller a chance to resolve this? or take it straight to amazon? i mean, what can the seller really do? what do i ask for - to send it back and get a refund? that doesnt really solve anything, because other people might buy it. i'm taking suggestions

Go straight to amazon first. If they tell you to settle with the seller then do so.

Open Your Account.
Find the order.
Open the order.
Click View Order.
Click Problem With this Order?.
Contact seller.
If they don't respond in 3 business days, come back to the same place and file an A to Z claim.
Amazon will step in at that point.

You get what you paid for. As if $20 for a NIB DVD set that costs $80 MSRP and $60 from Amazon didn't tip you off. Yeah right, you're getting authentic stuff for that cheap. Most people who buy bootlegs know what they're getting into, you on the other hand is completely clueless.

 What the fuck is your problem man? When you pay for shit you expect it to be legit. Nobody BUYS bootlegs, why would they? If I'm dropping money on something it better be the right thing, as I can get bootlegs for free. You have no clue how much the OP paid either.

Sounds fishy OP, do what's been recommended and contact the seller... then amazon.

That DVD often goes for $30-35. $20 isn't a huge stretch.

Now I'm sure that throngs of crowds at the asian illegal DVD stores would disagree with you :p

But of course its a different situation when its claimed to be real and comes a bootleg set.

I don't see 'throngs' of people in this country paying for bootlegs. Maybe it's just my area but around here if were going to get an illegal copy of something we sure as hell won't be paying for it. Why pay for it when it's still illegal?

Convenience of not having to download it, or those that lack the technical skill to download and burn, but are too cheap the buy the real thing.

Its about $3 a DVD in Toronto, and those stores are pretty busy everyday.

Indeed, there is a thriving market for bootlegs in NYC. The people who tend to buy them are tourists, often from other parts of the US.

As for the OP, I believe Planet Earth w/ Sigourney Weaver is region 1. Though I'm not certain if other prints were made for international markets (though I would imagine those contain the original British narrator).

I've happily paid for bootlegs.

You see, bootleg doesn't always mean illegal. It can mean a fan recorded concert, for example.

Usually that is illegal as well. Some (not many) artists allow the audience to record, but rarely do they allow you to sell those recordings.

pwn3d. :p

And I agree with gor...you don't buy off of Amazon with the intention that you're going to get a bootleg copy. I don't even think Amazon allows for that stuff.
