Got the Accord back road worthy this weekend

Well my wife's 1994 Honda Accord EX with 262K+ miles on it has been sitting for around 2-3 months. The car had a bad master cylinder which would lead to the pedal going to the floor while stopped and sometimes while in traffic. I deamed the car not road worthy and she started driving my car while I drive my weekend truck to work.

The master cylinder wasn't a bad job. Flare wrenches were absolutely necessary. It had two 8mm flare nuts and 2 10mm bolts holding the master cylinder to the booster.

I got the part off and brought it to advanced auto parts and got a reman unit for 40$ after giving them my core. We bench blead the new master cylinder then installed it to the booster. We blead it again just creating a loop of rubber hose to the resevoir. The job took maybe 1 1/2 hours being very careful to not get air in the lines. The brakes feel like new and the sponginess is gone.

This car has a seperate ABS fluid pump that has been empty for quite some time. I don't know why it was empty, but the ABS light has been on for some time. We refilled it and sure enough the light went off and you could hear the ABS pump run. How long it will keep the fluid I don't know, but before with the light on the car functioned like one without ABS... which was fine to me.

We also got the A/C running. There is a leak in the A/C somewhere because every few months you have to put freon in it. I put some leak stop in the lines, but I doubt it will work.

The battery was also in bad shape. Lot of corrosion. It was barely 2 years old so I took it to advanced and had it tested. Their fancy battery checker deemed it bad and I got a 47$ credit and go another for an additional 27$. Man batteries have gone up in the past few years.

Other issue is the blower motor is on it's way out. Right now it work sporadically. If you knock it with the plastic end of a screw driver it will start up. I have the part coming from rock auto for $40 shipped to solve this problem.

All in all this car still runs great. There is a bad oil leak, but I don't think it's worth fixing. The car still gets 30 MPG or better on the highway and still has good get up and go despite its age and mileage.

Lot of problems for a Honda with only 262k on the odo.

Have you had this car since new or did you buy it used?

I don't know where it is leaking oil, but I think it may be the rear main seal. There is a lot of fluid on the transaxle, but it's not transmission fluid.

Some history on the car. My wife's parents bought this car for her when she was 15 in 1998. It was a single owner and in great shape. Being that it was her first car it has definately seen some abuse. It made it through 3 years of highschool and 4 years of college so you know rough that can be.

My theory on the master cyliner is that the brake fluid has probably never been changed while I imagine at least 8 brake jobs have been done on the car (either front or rear... not combination) since I have known her ... around 2001. All that nasty fluid has been pushed back in the lines everytime we compressed the pistons.

The rear brake pads absolutely suck on accords are relatively small and they wear a lot faster than the front.

The only other work has been a tune up with timing belt and plugs and wires, CV joints once, and on the electric fans on the radiator was replaced. It has had regular oil changes.

Although it sounds like a lot of work the car also sat for a while which contributed to the battery issue.

It still only cost me around 100$ to get it going and it's running great.

Those cars have a history of ABS problems. I believe there is a rubber o-ring inside the ABS unit that wears out and it won't hold fluid so the ABS light comes on. Almost every Honda Accord from this time has this problem because no one will pay to fix it.

I had a 1995 Accord LX with gobs of oil on the transaxle just like you. I was told it was coming from either the rear main seal, or the seal around the timing area. (Cam seal?) Turns out it leaking badly from the timing belt area. My mechanic told me rear main seal leaks in this generation Accord are very rare.

How long has it been since you had your timing belt/water pump replaced? Oh and yeah, my Accord had the same ABS issues.

It has been quite some time since the timing belt change. It probably happened around 125K miles... so it's definately due for one, but I just don't know if the car is worth it.

Did fixing that seal solve your oil leak problem?

The ABS is currently working, but I'm just wondering how long it will be until it leaks out again.

On your oil leak, try snugging up the oil pan bolts. My son's '96 had a one or two drop a night leak that made a mess of the underside and driveway, and once I tightened up the oil pan bolts it has virtually stopped! 😉

I agree with the others on the ABS leak, it will probably leak out again soon. Not worth fixing IMHO.

Will give that a try.

I've heard the part can cost 1K+... so yah not worth it to me.

I figure a timing belt job would be 500$+ so that's why its not worth it to me either.

I still think I could get $1K for it in the classifieds or craigslist.

Having the seal(s) changed around the timing area completely, 100% stopped the oil leak. Not a drop on the driveway or undercarriage since.
