Got the 250 GTS.

I thought the 2xx series cards were supposed to be a lot faster than the 98xx series cards.

Maybe everyone here knows something I don't

Hey Mark,

Those cards are the same - they use the same asic (g92 128sp)... Like a core 2 duo e8400 & a xeon x3110. Slight differences: Vram is different 1024 vs. 512, and clockspeeds, and an more recent vga bios.

shot in the dark here - but update bios - might be a problem with the cards being PCI-e 2.0.

OK, so no ideas on the fact that one says 1x pcie, and the other 4x pcie. WTH is going on here ????

As I said, my other DQ6, same OS and all other software the same is one @ 16x and one @ 4x.

OK, I am pretty sure its past the 4 hour rule. I can't believe that nobody has any input on the slow PCIE speed (1x)

After that reinstall your video drivers.

No,no,no and yes...It was fine on ...

1) The older 2 video cards (a pair)
2) The new video card, but only one.

This has nothing to do with bios, or boards drivers, since it worked on the last 2 cards.

So, does anybody have any ideas ??

hmmmm. Interesting thread. Not quite my situation, but....(Note: I have 2 identical motherboards, and they don't match, same bios and cards)

The main difference between GTS250 1GB vs 9800GTX+ 512MB is the following:

-GTS250 1GB has a shorter PCB.
-Utilizes the same heatsink as the 8800GTS 512MB.
-Uses the G92-451 core which has a little better power characteristics.

Either than that the core features remain the same.

My 260 896 meg $200 cards do 6k ppd, and my 9800 GTX 512 meg $135 cards seem to do the same ppd, so I am confused, since I thought the 2xx series cards were supposed to be a lot faster than the 98xx series cards.

1. For F@H, the more shaders the better, especially for future WUs.
2. The higher you can OC the shader cores the better ppd (OC on memory and other core doesn't do much, it's all shaders for ppd).

Everything GPU is changing so fast it is hard to keep up! GTX, GTS, 9800, 8800, 250, 260 w/192, 260 w/216, 275, 280, 285 - how is one to keep it straight? I don't even try!

Your 9800s do so well because of #2 above, high shader clocks. My 275 does little better because of #1, more of them.

I think you did good with the 250s, they use less electricity, right?
I think there is a ppd/watt thread over at folding forums.

The only thing I can think of, is a BIOS setting somewhere.
If you haven't done so already, make sure the BIOS version of the boards are both the same as the one you currently have operating at 1x 16X and 1x 4X.

Next, reboot both machines and go over the BIOS settings line by line, section by section.
Note any descrepancy. I'm sure you thought to do all of this already, so I'm just thinking out loud here.

Make sure all external GPU power connectors are connected and providing sufficient power to the GPUs. I don't know how true this is, but I've read somewhere that if the GPU isn't getting enough juice, the mobo may reduce the PCI-e multi. I may be very wrong here so don't quote me. But try different power lines to the GPU. It can't hurt.

I don't know what else to do or try. I'd say it's a little easy to miss BIOS setting somewhere.
I'll look through the online PDF manual and see if I could spot anything obvious.

Since the race is over, I have moved cards around, and now those 2 cards are on my primary box. I put the 8800GTS's back in to show the guy who was going to buy them. They are are 16 and 4 ! Onve he buys them, my 2 9800 GTX+ cards will go in there, so we will see then.

Honestly I don't see why you didn't get a single 9800GX2 as those are supposed to be folding beats and offer lower power consumption than 2x cards based on the same GPU. I know the 9800GX2 is old news but tbh so are GTS 250's.

Or are you just posting them to compare the stats between the two types of cards? I'm watching all this type of post b/c I am trying to figure out what to do with this latest build (below). I'm still using the GEforce 8800GT that was originally bought for my last build, the Q6600 OC box. I'd love to complete this box with a video card worthy of mention and put this video device back in the other computer I pulled it from.

Not heavy into gaming at this point, but I am looking for a good shoot-m-up to replace my old Quake/Doom habits. I do run dual 19" Samsung Flatpanel monitors but they are currently running off the same card - that old GEforce 8800GT.

Yep, I remember reading about how Nvidia put the 1GB models on a more compact PCB. I guess the 55nm shrink allowed them to use more efficient power circuitry.

I think this is why we see ATI cards run hotter than Nvidia's under gaming conditions.

With ATI a higher percent of the xtors are used to run the game programs. With Nvidia the video cards don't really get stressed until a GPGPU program is used right?
