Got Spam? -- spamnet is god-like

Did a search, didn't see this anywhere. If you are using Outlook (not express) check out Cloudmark Spamnet. I can't say I have used a better spam filtering system. It uses community reporting to filter out spammers so it's a lot more effective than what comes with Outlook.

I use Outlook, but only to manage my student account and Hotmail...will this take care of my Hotmail account too? Been reading about how MS is going to implement a spam filter, but it'd be great to have something in the meantime.

Hotmail can be checked from Outlook express. I dont use Outlook, but I'm guessing it should.

What are the server settings (pop.hotmail.com or what...?) I should set in outlook for this feature?

It's not POP3. It's something like "Internet mail" or "HTML mail". It may only be in Outlook 2002. I know the one that comes with Office XP has it.

I believe you have to pay to be able to retrieve Hotmail in outlook. Something like $5 a month. They have tutorials on their site.

From Hotmail Help section...

To set up your Hotmail account in Outlook Express, you'll need to use Outlook Express version 5.5 or later.

In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
On the first page of the Internet Connection Wizard, type your full name, and then click Next.
On the Internet E-mail Address page, type your full Hotmail address (name@hotmail.com).
On the E-mail Server Name page, click HTTP in the My incoming mail server is box.
In the box My HTTP service provider is, click Hotmail.

On the Internet Mail Logon page, type your password.
Click Finish to add your Hotmail account to Outlook Express.

Notes
Access to your MSN Hotmail account in Outlook Express is provided as a trial service only with limited support.
You can download the latest version of Outlook Express from the Web. For Windows, go to the Microsoft Internet Explorer Web site. For the Macintosh, go to the mactopia download Web site.
If several members of your household have Hotmail accounts, you can add those accounts to Outlook Express. Or you can create multiple identities in Outlook Express to keep each account private. On the Help menu, click Contents and Index. On the Index tab, type identities. Click an Identities subentry, and then click Display to see the topic.

I have a website that will list ALL SPAM ON THE INTERNET PERIOD.

Too bad it is only for use in my office:(

Needless to say we get NO SPAM:cool:

EDIT: Obviously this information has to be inputed into the servers but it does it's job

A "section" of this list is 10MB.....just ip addresses and hosts/address etc.

I posted this a few weeks ago. The good and the bad:

Good:
Usually effective.
Has only wrongly filtered an email once, out of 5000+ and counting spam emails.
Invisible, no need to really do much once it's setup

Bad:
It's not ready for primetime. There are many bugs. Sometimes the program will just dissapear from outlook, sometimes it crashes it upon opening. They are getting better with this in each release (there was a new realease a couple days ago). However, I used to get about 98% of my spam filtered under 6d, under 6f I only get about 75%. Good, but not perfect.

There is no local list of blocked addresses. I notice sometimes it continually lets through address I have manually blocked day after day. Which tells me that not enough people are reporting it as spam so It's not being blocked by the community. But ideally, the program would have a localized list of spammers I have marked manually and would filter those out on my end even if it wasn't blocked community wide.

not for outlook express

instructions for hotmail

find a program called web2pop. it retrieves your hotmail (and yahoo) mail via pop3. so if you want to filter your hotmail, use web2pop, outlook as your email client, and then spamnet for the filtering.

Mine disappered from Outlook the other day. I uninstalled and reinstalled and it's back. Thing is, it does not seem to be working anymore. I has not filtered any spam. So mad.
