Got some old computers... how long for a SETI unit on them?

Hey guys.

A while ago I asked my father if his office had any old hard drives around that I might be able to use (this is for a SETI computer I'm building).

On Friday when I went back home from college, there were 4 computers sitting in the basement for me.
I haven't gotten a chance to see if the hard drives work because I think they're not booting up just because the operating systems were taken off. The drives get detected quickly though, so I assume they're still good... maybe heh.

Anyway, I want to know if you guys have any ideas on how long a work unit might take on them.
I'm planning on installing 98se on them if that matters, and the CLI version of SETI.

1. 333mhz Celeron w/ 64mb ram
2. 400mhz Celeron w/ 64mb ram
3. 550mhz K6-2 w/ 64mb ram
4. 700mhz Pentium III w/ 128mb ram

I think I'm probably going to take the 128mb out of the last one and upgrade my sister's 500mhz Pentium III with it and take a 64 stick out of hers for it. She's running XP on 192mb right now, and I figure giving her 256 and the SETI computer 64 would be a good idea since she's actually going to be using her comptuer for something more than SETI heh.

Thanks guys. I know there's some place to figure out how long it should take, but I think I lost it.

Oh, and if you care, after all these are running, I'll have these in addition to:
5. 1733mhz AthlonXP @ 2200mhz w/ 512mb ram
6. 1533mhz AthlonXP w/ 512mb ram
7. 1533mhz AthlonXP w/512mb ram

all working 24 hours a day crunching, woohoo.

(oh, and if you're still stalking me, I love you Dawny)

1. About 15-18 hours
2. About 14-18 hours
3. Too long... The K6-2 FPU isn't great...
4. About 8-10 hours

It also depends on the chipset used on the mobo. Intel chipsets are better than VIA chipsets at SETI.

Crunch baby, crunch ! 🙂

That looks like a nice start to your fleet!

Confused

1. I'd say about 16-17 hours
2. & 3. look about right
4. Also looks close, but I've got a PIII-700 OC'd to 933 and it does about 6h15m

Make sure the memory timing is set as agressive as possible to still be stable.

Thanks guys.

I guess I'll have my production up to about 27 a day then 🙂

I'm hoping there will be some computers lying around campus when people are leaving UW-Madison that I might be able to pick up when I leave since I have an exam on the last possible day and most people are going to be gone by then.

Oh yeah, I also wanted to know if anybody had any experience running that Linux SETI thing where you don't need a hard drive. I think the hard drives work in these computers, but if they don't, I might try the linux thing. Is that hard to set up? I figure it might just be easier to get some hard drives off ebay if these don't work.

Too bad they're back home in Milwaukee and I wont see them for another 2 weeks to test them.

The WU times aren't so much important as just getting them crunchin. If you need drives let me know I got a few maxtor 3gigs kickin around. 🙂

Thanks Soggysocks, I'll keep that in mind if I find out all the current drives are only good for magnets heh.

One of them is 15 gigs, and I think another said it was 8 gigs, so I'd be pretty happy if they worked. I was already working on a SETI comptuer using parts from when I last upgraded (that's going to be the second 1800+ cruncher), and I was planning on puting a 1.18 gb drive in it that I found, but if this 15 gig works, that would be wonderful as I plan to use the computer for some divx too since I'll have it hooked up to a tv rather than a monitor.

I have setup 1 pc here using it, its pretty easy to setup but u have 2 make sure u have a compatible network card.
I ended up using a NE2000 PCI clone and that worked with the default disk image 🙂
Goto this site: http://bhs.broo.k12.wv.us/homepage/staff/seti/lrp-dl.htm for the disk images and some info on it 😀

C if u can get it working, if you have any problems PM me and i will try 2 help 🙂

i recently started a new (old) system up . . .

Intel P54C 133 MHz w/ 64 Megs EDO Ram (72Pin - 60ns)
>runs IE 5.5 / WIN 98 SE (with a few updates)

> when i was running CLI v3.03 SETI SPY & DRIVER - got 22 - 24hrs p wu
> SETI did an *Automatic?* upgrade to CLI v3.08 - now it'll take a few days (bummer!!!)

when i 'ave the time (lol) . . . i figure i'll re-install 3.03 ( for the TeAm ) of course . . . 😀

Note: this is the Third machine 'crunchin' for SETI / TeAm AnandTech 😎 [468 MHz / 233 MHz]

SETI did an *Automatic?* upgrade to CLI v3.08 - now it'll take a few days (bummer!!!)

when i first started this 133 MHz up w/ cli v3.08 - spy said it would take 768 Hrs. to complete 1 WU

LMAO on that one 😱

Nice gift those PCs! ,especially the PIII 🙂

I've got a couple of PIII 800s at work on 810 chipsets running SETI ,I get about 8.5hrs/WU out of the 1 that doesn't have a screen saver set ,9hrs/WU from the other 1.

As for the site to calulate WU times that's here🙂

Its calculates for your rigs:-

1. 17 hrs 47 mins
2. 15 hrs 40 mins
3. 22 hrs 50 mins
4. 9 hrs

Cool, thanks for that link.

On a somewhat related note, I just got the fastest WU time I can remember getting off my main rig.

2 hours 9 minutes... sweetness

bummer !!!
lost all the WU's (about 22) - they took (average) 12 - 20 hr each

Intel P54C 133 MHz w/ 64 Megs EDO Ram (72Pin - 60ns)

>from THAT box - had 2 transfer (modem 'dissapated' 😀)
