Bump.

Got my replacement, its the exact same as I had (8800GTS 640), which is perfectly fine by me considering it was an upgrade to my first eVGA card from years ago.

Seems to be working but one problem;

I've only been able to get the card to work twice now. Every other reboot, without anything changing in the case, on the card, etc, has left the card dead. No air flow from the exhaust, and no signal out of the cable. Everything else is booting fine however (CPU Fan, hard drives, LED's on case fans, LED on motherboard, etc).

Thoughts on cause?

My 8800gts has died and needs replacing. Since I built this pc (core 2 e6600, 2gb ram) back when the core 2s first released I have fallen out of the tech world and don't know what is good.

All I want is something comperable to what i have now. Prefer both nvidia and amd (ati?) so options of both lines are appreciated.

Only worries: bottle necking from other hardware and i only have pci e 16x (not 2.0?).

Thanks in advance!

Ps typed from iPad, forgive falings

how long do you plan to hold onto your rig?

what games do you play on it?

what resolution do you run at?

As long as it's useful, I have a MacBook pro and rarely use the pc but I want it up and running again. I only play steam games on my pc (tf2, CSS, and portal, not demanding games). Run at 1680/1050 or 1920x1080 depending on the monitor.

Only use one monitor at a time btw

An HD 5670 would be a good replacement for the slower 8800GTS. A 5670 should be cheap, a bit faster than the slow 8800GTS, and enough for Valve games.

A GTS 450 or HD 5750 would be a good replacement for the faster 8800GTS. Still inexpensive and a slight performance boost over your old card.

Should I worry about the pcie 2.0 or lack there of on my part? and are those good bang for my buck cards? Non history of issues or whatever?

PCI-E 2.0 cards should be backwards compatible, although some motherboards do have issues. Google your motherboard to see if it has issues. Those should be good bang for the buck, but that depends on where you live and who you buy form. There are some older generation cards that are good, too, but availability is in question, which is why I just listed newer cards.

i would go with a cheap 5770 if you can find one.

or if you dont mind a used card, a gtx260 should be a good match for the conroe.

edit: have you googled 'baking a nvidia card?' perhaps your 8800GTS can be repaired and brought back to life.

Was just reminded by another thread that eVGA has a life time warranty program and while I thought I had never registered my card and could not use it, I was wrong.

I had to RMA my 8800GTS 320 back when it first came out and it was replaced by the 640. Its fully registered and available for RMA. Sweet! :D

Thanks for the help guys, I feel like an idiot for forgetting about this D:

Will do! I'm excited, eVGA has always done good by me. I wonder if its even possible they would have 8800's in stock still...

What mobo are you using? Many skt 775 have a cold boot issue, so that eveyr other reboot fails. Usually a bios update will fix the problem, however.

ASUS P5W DH Deluxe. Never had that problem in the years I've had this motherboard.
