Got "Operation Flashpoint"...first impressions

I'm running it at 1280 x 1024 x 32bpp and runs in D3D very well indeed. However, I'm struggling with it. It's definately not Q3A ot UT. 😉

Lots of hiding in bushes and stuff. The cut scenes get on my nerves already, but the AI is very good. Alert the enemy to your position and they toast ya... lol.

Early days yet, but I think I might start to like the more I get into it.

😉

I have played this too (co-worker already received it) and its quite interesting game. The cut scenes are a bit annoying, but I hit ESC to skip them. Saving wasn't an issue, I could hit ESC and save at a specific point, or it would auto save for me when I hit a specific area or accomplished a specific goal.

He has a problem playing under Win2k at home, but my Win2k machine here plays it just fine. We'll be firing it up come a bit later tonight to see more of the AI in action. So far the AI is a bit mixed. The first time I played I whooped on the AI like they were tele tubbies. We even had an encounter were I was say.. 10-15 feet from them and they didn't even see me. I waxed one of them and the other didn't even turn around. Talk about bad AI.

Second time I play, much smarter and waxed me quite quickly. Its a bit random from what I've seen, but I enjoy it all still. Come September, the US version will be out with bug fixes and a dedicated server (this should really help).

<< Hmm I've got this too, just haven't isntalled it. Can this be played online like CS? >>

Yes, this game can be played online. However, it is very different than CS -- you will learn that quickly when playing online. You think you die fast in CS? HA! You die in two bullets in this game more often than not, so check your 6!

I've played as well and I concur its difficulty. I am eager to go back and play. Very realistic game and very cool 😎

Is the full version out yet? Cause you can't play online in the demo... and why is it only D3D? Where's the openGL?!

Woah crap... Your P3 800 coupled with the GF2 can really take the game at that res. I'm using my P3 550 with a GF2MX and it's really choppy even at 800x600x16!

<< aye, so this is another rainbow six? wow, gee, that sounds fun. >>

Realism like R6 with that you can't run and gun plenty, but this isn't as much about fun as it is about a war simulator. If you're looking for a CS like game, look elsewhere. If you want a war sim, then this is for you.

The game is D3D, D3D with T&L and Glide (joy for all the Glide folks out there). I haven't played online yet (not enough time at work yet), but I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. The current missions are quite cool, but it does feel a bit random for the AI. One time they'll hardly notice me, the other time I hit out of nowhere.

tried the demo.... I have to say that this is one of the first games that being in a moving car actually feels like youre sitting in a car. i like.

i agree that this game is quite realistic, your team actually tries to hunt you down and kill you if you shoot them, whenever I get bored with all the talk I find a good place to take cover and attack my platoon, I also enjoy driving the cars and trucks into other trucks and then run over the soldiers.

ugh - You might be right about the GF2. Thats why my GF3 has no problem running it at that res. Engage brain b4 engaging mouth. 😉

I'm very disapointed in it, you are limited in your saves, I though a CS headshot was bad but this is terrible in this game, one hs from anyone and your dead and have to restart over.

The Idea and theory are great don't get me wrong but it's no half life.

I would sum it up like this, it's a half life 2 wannabie but with a Rainbow six type of engine with a Project IGI type of gameplay. It's ahead of it's time for sure but unplayable, the commands are awkward, some parts are incredible but some are truly sad, for example I climed a ladder but there was no way to get down so I ended up restarting the level because I had no choice, the 'joy' of playing it just isn't there for me. I can't see myself playing it for 45 minutes and just before the level completes I get popped from someone a mile away that I never saw and then have to restart it over again. The theory of the game is nice, but it's just not right. but that's my opinion.

Sorry to hear that dude. I dont see how it can be compared to Half-life other than the fact that they are both 1st person shooters. Flashpoint is supposed to be a realistic war simulation and generally, in real life, if your shot in the head-its pretty much lights out.

>in real life, if your shot in the head-its pretty much lights out.

ok let's compare it to real life and make it as realistic as posible, according to your reasoning, if you get shot and die once you should never play that game again then. In real life, if you get shot in the head you don't respawn or reload your life.

I'd wish that games wouldn't be compared to real life because they are NOT real life.

Sorry for the lack of response. I just have not played it at all. This weekend I will give it a go and return enlightened.
😉

Thanks for the heads up. I was living a lie & I didnt even know it!

I love this game.. its so realistic"aka real life", only problem i have is that there is only one coop mulit player mission, but i read today that they are coming out with 2 new weapons and 2 new vehicals with 6 new multi player missions. I've been playing this with two friends mult style using the built in voice communication, and so far we have no complaints
