I have had several interviews with a local tech support company that is primarily a network provider for several businesses in town as well as the DSL/56k jazz

They gave me an offer of full benefits and $25k a year. I find this to be a little low in pay for I was always told techies started out between $12-$14 an hour.

this comes out to be $13.02 an hour but it really never hit me till I saw it on paper.

Any thoughts?

I have been offered a few other tech jobs that paid 27k-29k

I chose this 25k for a multitude of reasons.

1. I plan on staying at home saving 1000 a month till I get about 10,000 (10% of a house downpayment)

2. I live 3 miles away round trip, I did the math... my car gets 30mpg, surrounding cities were 50-90 miles round trip away, I would spend the minimum if 3 bucks a gallon for gas, 1200 a year. Not to mention wear and tear on car and depreciation on it.

3. Having a 1 hour lunch means I could go home (only 5 minutes away) and cook for lunch saving more money.

4. The guy who had my job previously moved up in the company to become a network admin for a new business that just started. I see growth in this company the more businesses that come into town. Which is growing...

5. It's a real laid back atmosphere, I dig.

thanks for the replies, I start March 3rd!

Too little information.

What are you currently doing and what do you get paid? Degree, certs, relevant experience? Location and COLA where you live? And big question, do you want to do tech support?

In my area, that would be an acceptable job.

If you have no work experience and want to get into the IT fields, this would be a decent start. And it depends, are you going to school? What's your education background? Do you WANT to go into the IT industry?

I would take it, since im doing a Masters and this would be nice to pay for school and allow me to put something in my resume

Kinda depends on your age.. I work for $12 an hour at a tech support call center for DSL. It's a part time job and I go to college, I think it's pretty good for a part time job. I am 20 right now and I feel that I'm making a lot more money than my peers at college.

wow, 25k/yr is poverty salary =/.

I don't make that much either (about 2x much as much as OP's offer), but I find myself living almost month to month. I don't even spend all that much on personal goodies either.
bleh, such as the sunshine tax (San Diego).

If I were you, i'd look elsewhere seriously. But, we have to know your education background, your goals, what you do now, etc etc.. to make a better judgement

Let's do a little roleplay. I'll be your first caller.

"Ya, hi, can you help me fix my homepage....it's not coming up when I click on the E on my hard drive."

Take it if it makes you happy and provides what you want. I don't have enough information about your background, your location or the job responsibilities to go on.

Yeah San Diego is expensive.

I too hit the 2x mark doing help desk and that is before my annual bonus (max 13.2k, realistically closer to 3-5k ) plus paid OT...see if you can get some more!

Also...is that salaried or hourly?

EDIT:

13.02 an hr is more than 25k assuming 40hr work weeks which is why I asked.

You should talk to Farang. With 13.02 an hour, you can only work 10% of the time and vacation the other 90%

Thats kind of low. I don't think I could survive on that salary. I'm not happy with what I'm making as it is.

At the minimum, we need to know age, location, education, and years of formal technical work experience.

Yeah. How about after you post asking for opinion you follow up to questions that were asked 3 mins later?

In this economy? Take it.

Exactly, it's already hard enough to find a job.

Like, for instance, my city is heavily military favored. There are very few jobs available unless you have the qualifications to work in the defense industry (which I don't). Even menial jobs are hard to come by.

Basically no new jobs have really opened up these past few years, at least where I live.

It's a great move if you want experience to move into a technical job. I worked tech support for 4 years before moving into systems administration. Really, knowing how operating systems, networking, and applications work are the bulk of it, but having an understanding of hardware doesn't hurt. If you're in the right market, you might be able to find an entry-level systems job somewhere to move up to.
