Got myself some new tires!

My Dunlop Star Specs were getting pretty low in the tread, but what pushed me was the right side was losing like 3-5psi per week. No punctures on the tires that I saw, so who knows. :hmm:

Anyway I decided on some Michelin Pilot Super Sports, or basically what is replacing the PS2's. I've been hearing good things about them so hopefully they live up to expectations! They should be better than my z1's, and potentially last longer to, plus the $70 rebate from Michelin doesn't hurt either!

They go on tomorrow morning, thank god cause I have no where to put them in my apartment so the whole place smells like rubberD:, so I'll update after.

TireRack has an $80 rebate on Star Specs. 😉

Make sure to post how you like them - I love my Z1's, but I haven't tried any other really good tires yet either.

Why didn't you have them drop shipped to the place that's going to install them?

I know what you mean by the rubber smell though. I had a pair of Michelin Pilot Powers delivered a couple weeks ago and had them in garage for a couple nights and the entire garage smelled like fresh rubber.

I wasn't quite sure when they were arriving or when I would be able to install them. It's not that big of a deal.

I cant imagine the smell is toxic, would have to be a warning label if so.

I knew about the deal with star specs, but I wanted to try something new. PSS's have a higher treadwear rating, suppose to perform better, and be quieter.

I doubt the wheels are 'porous' the wheels were off the car for a few months and sat in a outdoor(closed) shed, since it got pretty darn cold this year I think that may have affected things. I'll find out otherwise in a week I guess. :hmm:

Not really. Tires aren't meant to be stored in a house-- they're usually in warehouses which are required to be well ventilated by OSHA. So there would be no reason for them to have a warning label. Houses normally aren't ventilated at all in the USA, especially since there's an obsession with energy efficiency rather than health. Europe on the other hand requires HVAC systems to include air exchangers.

If I were you I'd get the fumes out of there with some box fans to be safe.

I carried tires in my Mustang once after having a set shipped to my parents. I had to pull over on the way home because of the fumes, my eyes were burning/watering so bad I couldn't keep them open. I won't be doing that again.

I really wanted to do the Super Sports back in March or so but Michelin had no stock in my size which meant they weren't going to be available at launch. I still don't think they're available in 245/45 17 but the Americas Tire I went to said they'd give me pro-rated credit to trade in the PS2's if I wanted to upgrade.

Now it seems Tire Rack no longer lists PS2's in that size, I wonder if super sports are imminent...

Except they usually aren't stored in warehouses and plenty of people keep them at home. I would imagine if there was some issue we would have heard of it by now. I know they are toxic when burned however.

I do have the windows open and a fan on most of the time, probably drive down there windows down. Oh well if actually so.

Time to report back on them. So far I have around 200 miles on them, so they might get a bit better but otherwise good to go.

Ride quality - Difficult to tell on a modified Impreza, perhaps a touch better, but definitely not any worse than before. The sidewalls might be a touch less stiff.

Noise - This is where a significant difference comes about, these tires are much quieter than the star specs! They still make noise of course but they don't howl like before, more of just typical tire rolling noises. On some rather new and good pavement the noise level dropped significantly, and I was rather impressed by that! The Impreza is not known for quietness so it's a nice benefit!

Weight - Each tire is a good 4lbs off of a comparable star spec, and I can tell. Mostly in low speed maneuvers the wheel is not as difficult to turn. However this could also be because I feel this tire has a smaller contact patch so it's not gripping as much. Eitherway I do feel a slight difference having 16lbs of rotating mass out of the car, perhaps I'll see a slight mpg improvement.

Braking - I feel I might have to give the Star specs the edge here. Very rarely could I ever 'lock up' or induce ABS with those tires, but I've already been able to get some squeaks out of these PSS's under hard braking. It's not hugely different, but I do think the SS's were better in my car but only slightly. Tests will probably prove me differently.

Handling - This is a real difficult one to give any edge to. I've managed to get some squeaks from the PSS's, but not slide. In my latest test I did feel them sort of break free but then it almost feels like they got a second wind and caught again. I only did a quick mountain road test for this, so when I go on a more extensive one I will know better. They both feel really nice, grip really nicely, and seem to break away cleanly. The PSS's might be louder though, the SS's rarely made noise for me even when sliding.

I have not had a chance to test them in the rain, so that's yet to be determined. The SS's really impressed me there so I'm hoping for good things. Overall these PSS's seem like a rather good tire. They grip well, are quiet, and have a nice treadwear rating. I can't really speak on the feel of them to well, WRX's aren't known for steering feel, but the car feels planted and what I can feel through the wheel is fairly communicative. They also feel really well made.

If your trying to decide between the two tires, it becomes really difficult. The SS's are a decent bit cheaper, but don't last as long, however I feel they perform nearly/as well in most cases to these PSS's. We shall have to wait on the Tirerack's official testing figures to really find out.
