Well I have narrowed my transmission slipping problems down to an overheating issue. Pretty much when the engine is cool, my trans is fine. When it is hot the trans slipps in Overdrive and Drive coming from a stop.

When the engine cools down when driving over 55mph, the trans works perfect with no slipping from a stop.

I figured that the radiator in my car is not offering enough cooling for the trans fluid so I picked up one of these babies at Autozone for $29.99.

I plan on mounting a 120mm Computer fan on it as I am more concerned about stop and go traffic where it usually overheats most of the time.

Due to the amount of room that I have in my engine compartment, I am able to easily mount it in several locations. I thought I may as well mount it inside the bumper or someplace out of the way.

Any tips for the install from people who have done this?

The car came stock without one. If it's heating up then something else is wrong and the tranny cooler is just a band-aid for the a issue. Have you tried to fix the problem?

dude, a 120mm 12v fan is going to be completely overpowered by windspeed at even 20mph, and it does not have the static pressure to assist a radiator of that size. Now 4 of them, at like 120cfm per, in push-pull, you might be getting somewhere.

Well 4 of them would fit on it. Might as well do that then lol.

Anyways I know it is a long shot if it works, but even if it gets me a little more life out of my tranny, I'll be happy.

I've never done this but I think you're wasting your money.

Well, $30 is well worth the knowledge gained from this.

I probably wont care if it doesnt work. At least I spend my time working on my car rather than sitting on my ass in front of the tele.

Now after researching, it looks like my car's hoses come crimped and are pretty easy to add a cooler to.

Any suggestions with fans or a way to really cool this sucker when idle?

You don't need to cool it at idle. Don't add any fans unless it's a real automotive fan, and you know how to install it. Make sure you put in circuit after the stock cooler, not in front of it. It may help you, but really, if the transmission is slipping, you need some other work done. That car has a strong transmission and if it's slipping it needs work. Have you changed the fluid lately?

Have you changed the fluid lately?

I've gone to both Sears and Mr Transmission and they refuse to change the filter and fluid on it due to liability risk of some sort.

I am assuming that it has gone at least 80K miles without a change on the tranny fluid.

if you mount a fan on there, it might be pointless or you might be overcooling it as well.

ATF likes/perfers to be at a certain temp. operating temp. I would just put the cooler on there and thats it. People put coolers on their AT when they do racing events and etc. You might have a issue on your hands tho.

if your car has gone 80K on orginal stuff. what is the color of the fluid now?

if your going to install it, remember you need to add ATF because if needs to fill up the new cooler. so about .5 qts or so. rather then go to sears, just drain of fill your ATF once or twice. that is if your trans has a drain and fill plug.

i did a trans drain and fill on a jeep the other day and it had no drain plug.. it was a MESS

Yeah, by this point if you drain/flush/refill the transmission, you might as well just put a new one in. The metal particles suspended in the fluid is what's holding it together.

Put the trans cooler in front of the AC condenser, between the grill and the condenser so it goes trans cooler|AC condenser|radiator. Your rad fan should be able to pull enough air through it at idle to keep it from overheating.

Though zerocool is right, there's something wrong with your transmission if it's overheating when warmed up.

Yea, I just have to make it survive for another 2 months and then I'll be looking for a different car.
