Got myself a HID

Bought a scrap HID lamp of ebay becuase it was cheap.

150W of HIDness

Just finished refurbing it. There were a few screws missing, the ballast had detached itself from the housing and was rattling around inside, it was covered in about a decade's worth of dust of unknown industrial provenance, the glass was a dull grey color, and the reflector was almost black (and had various bits of melted sticker on it).

A little metal polish on the reflector, a quick wash cycle in the dishwasher for the glass and body - and it looks good as new.

All it needs now is a bulb and a new power cable. LOL. I can't believe I forgot to ask if it came with a bulb. A new bulb costs nearly 1.5x as much as I've paid so far.

Anyway, the thing is about 2x the size I was expecting it to be, and I haven't the faintest idea what I'm going to do with it. The damn thing is so heavy it'll never stay attached to the ceiling or walls - and it's probably gonna be way too bright.

Still, it's gonna be an interesting experiment.

Thought it was going to be a Human Interface Display.

You should put it behind you and put on a white bathrobe and try to get people to believe you are an angel.

Tomatoes FTW! 400watt HPS here 😉

edit: and catnip... my cats love me 🙂

Yeah, catnip...

Haha yeah I used to do the other thing, but now that I'm done with that, the catnip is the best plant to use the rest of my nutes on.

It's a super bright High Intensity Discharge light. It's like an overclocked lamp 🙂

(think streetlight)

ill take it, i can point it at my neighbors back windows to drive home the point of asking him nicely to turn his construction zone lamps so they dont point into my kids rooms all night. bastard.

Nothing particularly special - it's just a high power industrial lamp.

HID lamps are to halogen-flood lamps as CFLs are to normal light bulbs. So, this 150W lamp is probably brighter than 750W of halogen lighting.

I had this mad idea a while ago of making a SAD light - and someone pointed me in the direction of daylight simulation HID lamps, which have a much better spectrum and considerably more blue than full spectrum fluorescents, as well as considerably better energy efficiency. In retrospect it looks totally useless for that purpose, but my 6500K daylight simulation bulb should be here soon, and then I'll find out for sure. (Yup, Summer doesn't help much when you work all day in a darkened room). Failing that, I'm sure it'll make a nice office light, if I can work out where I can position it withough getting killer glare of my PC screen.

I would use it as a floodlight for my yard. Or attach it to the corner of my apartment and hook it into the motion detector so it'll come on where I get home from work at 11.

Gah. Got my bulb today.

Turn it on. Nothing. The ignitor is dead (I reckon that's what the problem is - if I put a linear halogen in it lights up at about 1/2 brightness, but HIDs won't start).

Fortunately, there's a very cheap 'buy it now' ignitor...

Well I am sure your doctor can prescribe something for HID's. But to brag about getting it is gross!:disgust:😱😉

This hot!

The answer is, very, very hot. As in, don't go anywhere near it - and definitely don't think of touching it.

The power regulating 'ballast' in the back has a running temperature of 270 F (130 C). The bulb gets a fair bit hotter - about 1800 F

Arc tube operating temperatures frequently exceed 900 degrees Centigrade. The outer envelope can reach 240 degrees Centigrade in enclosed fixtures.

NEVER use unshielded lamps (commonly referred as double sided lamps) without sufficient UV shielding and protection against extremely hot shards of quartz in the event of an arc tube rupture.

ALWAYS obey lamp operating position restrictions! Happy HID'ing. 😀

Hmm I probably wrecks hell on the temp in your office then.

I like how you have a $500 light to provide brightness for your ancient CRT monitor 😉

Image quality, color and pixel scaling are still better on a good old CRT.

<-runs a dell Trinitron from 2001.
