I have HD6850.
TV is Skyworth 42" uses something called cooca3d? (passive 3d)

Games I would like in 3d are Starcraft 2, Skyrim, NFS Shift2, Dirt 2.

I see that one option is to get a program called TriDef, is this the only way?

TriDef is not the only way, but it is by far the best for us ATI users. Make sure you have grabbed the latest ATI drivers as well.

TriDef supports a lot of games, and other ones that aren't natively supported have user-created profiles in the forums you can download. Lastly, there is a really cool in game UI ALA steam specifically for tweaking settings on the fly, which is great for games that are smaller / not native.

Half life 2 is incredible in 3d. So are all the Call of Duties. Wow is pretty cool, as is heroes of newerth / starcraft.

My only 3D-capable display is my DLP downstairs, and for kicks, I toted my old desktop (Core i7-860 + Radeon 5870) downstairs and set it up on the TV. Here are the problems that I had with it...

  • Unlike nVidia's 3D Vision, extra software is required, and it's not free. Now, I should state here that there's a bit more to this than I'm letting on. If the software natively supports 3D (I believe Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an example), the software isn't required. Also, nVidia charges you for a piece of software to do 3D over HDMI. 3D Vision, which is only over DVI-D, is supported in a pretty decent amount of games.
  • In my case, it was over HDMI, which is severely limited for gaming. The HDMI spec only calls for so many resolutions for 3D, and the most common are 720p50, 720p60 and 1080p24. The first two are alright, but as you can guess, 24Hz (24 screen refreshes per second) is ridiculously awful for gaming.
  • This is subjective, but it didn't add much for me. I tried Borderlands and StarCraft II, but I saw very little that made me care. I think the mineral patches were in 3D in SC2 and my gun had depth in Borderlands, but that was about it.
