Got My XM Radio Notice

I had asked about getting a cheaper rate with XM Radio in another thread, but I now have the notice in my hand. My free subscription runs out on June 16th so I still have a little time to decide what to do. I know that I can bargain with them for a price, but what price should I expect them to offer me? According to the letter they sent me, the normal rate is $12.95 per month and I am assuming there is a tax for that too. If I were to offer them $5 per month would that be something they would maybe accept, or would they just laugh and hang up on me? I was hoping someone who had done this before could give me some pointers on how to handle this.

I hear they are giving up subs for 5.00/mo - can't hurt to ask.
Most are complaining about them not renewing "Bubba the love sponge" who was on Howard 101 I believe, and getting the greatly reduced subs to retain them.

shit i'd pay $5 a month. if i could get xm for 10 a month or less out the door, i'd do it.

is this just old customers threatening to cancel, or you think they'd do it for someone who just signed up?

I called and had the XM in my truck activated, I had read threads on FW that stated $77 a year. The girl tried to sell me the 12.95 a month or whatever it is, she said it was the best deal available. I asked bluntly about the deal I read about for $77 a year, stating thats all the money I was going to spend on XM, she finally gave me that deal.

I got my renewal notice for auto renew in the mail.

Mine says subscription fee is $38.85 and a music royalty fee of $4.21

SO guess thats a good price.

and My package is xm everything, not my other PACKAGE..

The best pricing I've seen from XM is their $20 for 5 month deal. If you cancel, they'll send you the offer a month or two later. Otherwise, call them up to cancel and tell them it's just too expensive and usually they'll offer you the same deal.

What I find odd though is even when they mail you the offer for the 5mths/$20, they also offer you a 12 month package for something like $70. The 5 month package is the best. 😵

My trial ends in June also and I really don't care. Between all the FM stations in Chicago and my CD/MP3's I hardly listen to XM now and for the few stations I DO listen to I would not pay to keep them. Anyway, just tell them that you want the $20 for 5 months or the $77/yr and you should have no problem getting it.

I called them this morning and got a woman who was sort of gruff with me. Not sure why, maybe she had a rough night or something. In any case, she went thru her list of packages and I told her it was way too expensive. I offered her $5 per month and I would take it for 24 months, but she said she couldn't do that. She said if I changed my mind to call her back, but I told her to have a nice day and to forget about it because I couldn't afford it.

My plan is to wait and maybe call again later today, or on Friday or Monday, and hopefully I will get somebody different, someone more willing to wheel and deal with me. I like the idea of being able to pick up so many stations and being able to listen to them even when we are on a trip, but to be quite honest about it, the wife and I don't listen to more than a small handful of stations. Having the ability to tune in all those stations is sort of like giving a 12 inch dick to a monk, it's nice to have, but what is he going to do with it? Still, if I can get the service cheap enough, it would be worth it. One thing for sure though, if they think I am going to pay them their going rate for the service, they are laboring under a misconception. I like the service, but I don't like it THAT much.

When my wife lost her job she called XM to cancel at the end of the subscription. She told them about losing her job and couldn't afford XM anymore. They gave it to her for an additional 6 months free, but she'd have to call and cancel again. She took it for 6 more months free, felt bad about taking it free, and cancelled again at the end of 6 months. She went without it for 3 months, then XM called and offered her the $77 for a year plan. She declined and a week or so later XM called back and offered her the $5 a month for 12 months plan, then she resubscribed.

I just wish XM would back off the compression a bit or raise the bitrate, sound quality suffers badly from it..

I thought I was the only one who noticed. I really like the music and commentary on a handful of the channels on Sirius, but the compression is pretty brutal. Until the bitrate is raised, I won't pay any amount for the service. iPod and Genius playlists for me.

Yea, and I just have a factory stereo, 4 spkr and 2 tweets mounted near side mirrors, it would be tragic to feed that crap to a high-end car system IMO. Even a burned disk with 128K mp3's (converted to wav. files) sounds a lot better..

I just renewed for $30 for 6 months. When they called for me to renew at $12/mo and I said I'd pay $30 for 6 months the lady got really pissed off. When she said I was getting a month free I told her that I wouldn't pay any more. I went with no XM for 2 entire days and then I got my deal (because I read forums and people mention the offers). I don't get them.

I have a 7 speaker system in my car and XM sounds better than radio to me. I believe you about the quality but I just can't hear it. My last car was a 2000 Toyota Corolla though so the speakers were really bad. If sound is 'relative' then I've moved up a notch anyways.

My trial ended and I didn't pay. Weird thing is that the receiver in my car still works, it just doesn't get the channel information - so as long as I know what channel I want, it still works 😛

No different then phone plans it seems then really, I turned my 70$ a month plan into a 27$ a month plan.
