Got my XM radio from eCost...already activated?

Okay, so I bought one of those Sony XM satellite radio receivers from eCost...you know, the ones that were going for $115 shipped and then had a $75 rebate.

Well it appears that these units are refurbs...

and the one I got seems to be already activated! 🙂

How can I check if its lifetime activation or if it will run out someday? Is there like a serial number lookup somewhere on the web?

isn't xm monthly service ?
They also have 1 year - 5 year packages...though I can't imagine how stupid you'd have to be to buy one and then send your unit in for refurb without cancelling service?

Well, you're lucky you got it for free, because I couldn't see spending money on XM when you get a lot more with Sirius. I was researching both and I ended up with Sirius because they were only $2 more but they have absolutely no commercials on any of their music streams, while XM does and is getting more and more. It seems that Sirius also gives better reception in places where there are trees on either side of you and such, due to their higher degree of satellite orbit. Also, XM isn't looking too good after their recent system crash where most of the streams got screwed up, and the fact that one of their satellites is getting to the point of dying isn't vouching too well for them either. It's a shame that Sirius isn't marketing their service too well, giving people the impression that they're a small company bound to die, when in fact they are in a better financial state than XM is, especially with their new contracts with a lot of car vendors. And no, I don't work for Sirius, but like I said, I spent a lot of (probably too much) time researching the different providers.

XM sucks, we have it where I work. Instead of doing the smart thing and having stations for different catagories of music, each station tries to please everyone. There is no classic rock station to speak of, the best you'll get is 80s hair metal, or a station which plays the non-hits of famous rock bands, mixed in with some Elton John and U2.

when one sends in their unit for repair, they expect XM will fix it and send it back, not sell it to someone else. what actually happens is to reduce turn around time, they have somebody else's whose was broken and had already been repaired ready to ship the moment they receive the next broken one.
