well its a downgrade of course, just sold my X1900XT and picked this up simply to be an adequate replacement for gaming since i technically dont own a PC anymore.

this machines going downstairs, my dad payed my £300 for the lot, but i got rid of the X1900 because he didnt need it. my bro will play the occasional CS:S on it and i thought the X800GTO fireblade would be the perfect choice, its a good upgrade from the venerable 9500pro he was playing on anyway

initial impressions.... nice card, solid. the cooler sucks though. it looks like the X1900's but actually the X1900's is alot quieter...this seems less well engineered some how. Zalman VF900 here i come ! haha

ill report back with overclocking etc

I believe the fireblade was 12 pipes only and not unlockable, but it could overclock like crazy.

speaking of overclocking.... no overdrive page in the drivers for these cards?

jus have to use ATi Tool instead. will ATi Tool keep the settings after each boot? also i have an R480 core. thats the one out of the X850's isnt it?

I didn't have an Overdrive page with my X800GTO2 (before or after I flashed it). ATI Tool will work just fine and saves your overclocks, just make sure to set it to start with Windows. R480 is the X850 core, yours may be able to flash.

this doesnt look good.

i thought the lack of power connector might be a problem, but review sites seem to of been able to make this thing fly.... mine wont go much over 10% on the core. and the memory gets no where near Sapphires claimed 560Mhz + bit of a let down really

in ATI tool, there are yellow dots everywhere after so long, these i assume are artifacts but the artifact detector doesnt seem to think so. how come?

Keep trying, it's worth the effort. I've never heard of a fireblade unlocking but most easily topped 600mhz gpu and 600mhz memory. My gto did 630/625 with a vf700 cooler.

yeah already picking up a AC ATI silencer 5 rev2 for this, the cooler its got is just too loud gonna overclock the proper way running loops of 3d mark 05 whilst slowly adjusting. thats the only way.

the memory should easily hit 600. its 1.6ns stuff so theres no excuses.

well memory seems fine, running at 600 now

but the core is shocking... 450 seems to be its tops. judging by the heat coming out the back i reckon the HSF isnt ideally seated.

right well core seems to loading out at about 65 dgrees..... so guess the HSF is ok, is the core simply out of steam?

When you put on the silencer take a look at your core. If it says R430 that would explain the low overclock. If it's a R480 then I have no idea what's wrong.

ATi Tool is definately reporting R480.

EDIT - just check with everest

reports back as GPU Code Name = R480, and curiously reports the Video card as ATi Radeon X850pro.

stock speeds on this are 400 core, 980 mem. the memory easily tops 1200Mhz. but the core so far is woeful. i get artifacts galore at anything over 460
