Got my X-Box today with 3 games, here's what I think...

So I bought an X-Box today, have been waiting for it to come out for awhile now. Got 3 games, Halo, DOA3, and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysey with the system.

The X-Box is not as large as I had originally thought it was. I had originally thought it was the size of a VCR, but its actually more like half the size of a VCR. Bigger than PS2, but not enormous. The X-box is relatively quiet, it doesn't run any noiser than the PS2. The DVD tray has a quality feel to it, very similar to the tray of a computer CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, it does not feel nearly as flimsy as the PS2 DVD tray. The unit does run VERY hot. I would imagine that the X-Box could very well malfunction or produce some strange results if you kept it in a very warm room with little ventilation for the fans. I had a few problems with my X-Box, assumingly heat related because I threw my cablebox on top of the X-Box and the cablebox runs pretty warm. It could be that the unit will become less sensitive to heat after the "burn in" period, incase thermal paste needs to bond properly or anything like that. I don't imagine under normal usage that the X-Box would experience any problems as long as you don't block the fans.

In terms of games, the games all look great. There isn't anything revolutionary about any of the games in terms of graphics however.

DOA3 looks just as good as it does in screenshots, but it doesn't get the same reaction as when I played Soul Calibur on Dreamcast for the first time. The nicest thing about DOA3 is that the backgrounds look spectacular. The game itself is essentially still DOA2 though. There doesn't seem to be much changed from DOA2 except they added 2 new characters and the graphics are enhanced of course.

Oddworld looks nice, and is an overall fun game. All the loading problems and slowdowns from the demo disc that was released with the kiosks appear to be gone. Load times are significantly reduced now (easily less than 10 seconds to load a level, sometimes shorter). The game is a cute adventure game that involves a bit of strategy and thinking on the player's part, of course there is not too much thinking involved here.

Halo is easily the best of the 3 games I bought. It reminds me a lot of Unreal when I played it the first time. The outside environments are beautiful... You may actually find yourself stopping to take a look at the scenery. Playing with a controller is not as bad as it sounds either, although I still prefer a mouse/keyboard for FPS games.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Interactive sound is very nice. It works very well for Halo ... Stand in front of the waterfall and spin around, and you'll hear the waterfall panning around you on all 4 speakers. The strange thing is that the center speaker doesnt seem to be used in any of the 3 games I own, not even for speech.

Anyways, thats just my quick review of X-Box, if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to respond. Right now I think that X-Box has a lot of potential, and if Microsoft plays their cards right they have a great contender on their hands. The launch games aren't amazing games that are MUST HAVES, but there is a nice wide variety of games out there, and imho Halo is a great game to own on X-Box.

thanks for the post 🙂

hurry up and beat doa3 or return it since you dont like it and get project gotham and tell me how it is 🙂 cant really find any first hand reports, just reviews. most people didnt get it it seems 🙁

It's nice to have an review of a console doesn't contain the lines "so and so system r0xors!" or "so and so system sucks!!".

If you don't mind me asking, at this point in time, do you feel like your $400 - $600 (not sure what you paid) was well spent?

After playing the games for a while, would you have paid that if you had a second chance?

Hahah, I really should consider returning DOA3, but I think it will be a fun game to play when I have friends over. It just isn't any fun playing against a computer! 🙂

Personally, I don't think I'd like Project Gotham Racing simply because I hate the Kudos system. I tried Metropolis Street Racer for Dreamcast and it just wasn't any fun especially the very short tracks ... I felt like I was driving in circles for 30 laps (which I was!). The racing is more arcade style than Gran Turismo from what I understand, so if you like that sort of thing you should try it out ... The bad thing is its not a straight out racing game where you need to get 1st place. PGR wants you to do stuff like powerslide on all your turns and do fancy stuff to get Kudo points for it. If that sounds interesting to you, give it a whirl 🙂

I paid $500 for my entire "bundle" from Electronics Boutique (minus like $10 or so because the games were cheaper than EB originally anticipated). Anyways, when I bought Playstation 2 I felt like I spent a lot of money and I got almost no enjoyment out of it and it didn't impress me at all compared to Dreamcast. (The launch titles I bought for PS2 were ESPN X-Treme Snowboarding, Gun Griffon Blaze, and NHL 2001... I chose those because I don't like the Tekken series, and I don't like SSX because I don't like snowboard racing, I prefer Tony Hawk type of games). With X-Box so far, I don't feel cheated at all ... There is a clear advantage in terms of looks when you compare Playstation 2 or Dreamcast to X-Box. The advantage is not so great that I am jaw-dropped everytime I see a game, but it is great enough that I can sit back and appreciate the extra details.

Now right now I don't know if X-Box is worth $300 ... I'll let you know in 3 years if X-Box is still around 😉 ... But I do think for what you get with the console it is worth the money. Microsoft is the only console company with a clear online strategy (not counting Sega), and the built in Ethernet supports just that. The built in hard drive sounded like a stupid idea to me at first, but now it makes a lot of sense to me since it not only acts like a HUGE memory card (not to mention it saves games to the hard drive very quickly) and also with the Ethernet port, I can probably download roster updates for my sports games and add-ons for other games as well. So in terms of hardware I think I got my money's worth. Other than Halo which I've been playing the most right now, I can't say for sure whether the games were worth the money. I think Halo definitely was up to this point. (But I've only gotten about 2 hours of playtime in on it.) Right now I'm happy with the X-Box though! 🙂

Oh, by the way ... to anyone who owns a PS2 or has used one... One thing I like a lot about the X-Box is that its On/Off mechanism seems to make a little more sense than PS2. PS2 is a little bit confusing in that it uses an ATX style of on/off. To turn the unit on, you press the power button, to turn the unit off, you hold the power button down until the unit powers off, to reset the unit, you press the power button once. After you turn off the PS2, you're supposed to turn it off with the "hard" power button on the back too (if you're leaving it off for a long period of time). If you're changing games without turning off the system first you press Eject, then you swap games, and then you press the reset button, because PS2 still has your old game loaded and in most cases playing.

With X-Box the on/off button does just that, press once to turn on, press once to turn off. When you eject a game, the X-Box returns to the "splash" screen and if you put another game in, it will automatically boot that one. It sounds dumb and nitpicky, but I prefer the console to act the way X-Box (and Dreamcast) does. Little things like that just sometimes make your life easier when you're in a rush or something.

project gotham is awsome. I'm trying to get more cars. heheh. man, xbox tell you how long you been playing. It even set the time for you with daylight saving. I love project gotham

Nascar heat beats PGR IMHO. But they are different types of racers. PGR is good but for actualy racing, I like Heat better. Heat does look better on Xbox than on other platforms, although not to much, and some other things in Heat were fixed. Or so it seems. Either game I highly suggest a wheel as the controllers will hamper you, especially in Heat or Thunder. Anyone know when EA's F1 2001 comes out?

Halo A+
Madden 2002 A
Munchs A-
DOA3 A+
PGR B+
Heat B+
Shrek A-
Mad Dash C

finally, a review that DOESN'T suck 🙂

Thanks.

What's the state of multiplayer on it right now though? can you just plug it in your hub/router and connect it to your dsl/cable? And even if you can, is there anything you can do online?

Does it have like a browser or some online gaming service?

Hey guys. Just wanted to add my Gamecube perspective in on this thread 🙂. Through certain "connections", I am currently watching a friend play Rouge Squadron II on the Gamecube, and I have to say it is sweeeeet. Just for the record, I did play it for an hour and a half before him, and he was getting pissed because I wouldn't get off. I haven't gotten a chance to play with the XBOX aside from in-store demos, but it seems to hold it's own as well. I just want to let you people know that the Gamecube has so much potential with future titles, not to mention what it has in it's stable right now. I suggest for those of you waiting to compare XBOX and PS2, wait till you hear some more about the Gamecube from players like me, and don't rule it out. Damn, I going back to play some more!!

P.S. The Nintendo memory card only cost me only 15 bucks too!! DAYUM!! Gotta love that. Sure beats the usual $35.

MartyTheManiak,

As of right now, there is no online gaming service for X-Box. Microsoft is set to announce their online gaming strategy in 2nd quarter 2002 I believe. However, the system link cable for X-Box that links multiple X-Boxes together is simply an Ethernet cable (if you want to directly connect 2 systems you need a crossover Ethernet Cable). So if you want to do that, you can simply plug your X-Box (and up to 3 more X-Boxes) into a hub/switch and enjoy a nice game of 4 player Death match (or up to 16 players if you all play split screen)...

Microsoft has said that the X-Box is solely a gaming machine and nothing else and therefore will not be creating a web browser or keyboard/mouse for the X-Box.

I would imagine that once Microsoft announces their online gaming strategy, that X-Box will use the MSN Gaming Zone to find other players online.

Ferocious,

You really think they're going to charge for it? I sure hope not ... that would really suck. Paying $50 for a game is bad enough and then having to spend extra for online games makes it worse. I'm hoping that for a lot of games the MSN Gaming Zone will just be a place to find the other players and then once you start the game you'd connect directly unless there is a specific need for a server based game.

After playing halo for the past 14 hours solid I definatly agree with you about the outdoors!!! It's so good outdoors, I love driving the warthog around. The part with the tank is cool too.

The game takes a turn for the worse however when you get indoors. Everything inside is gray. Always.

Indoors areas are very repetative. I think they just made one or two rooms and just kept putting them side by side, 1, 2, 1 ,2.... etc.

As soon as you get inside in that game, you just want to get out again. Unfortunatly after a while, it seems you're always inside. Trying to get up 10 floors of some building. 1 by 1. Each floor is exactly the same... Takes 20 minutes per floor. Lots of baddies. Pain in the ass.

Anyone who has played this much have any thoughts??? Has anyone else played this much yet???

Im betting on $9.95 a month flat fee, $9.95 for online play of 10-15 titles at the start plus alot more down the road isnt to bad, alot cheaper than a movie. I also bet they will only charge $5 per instead of the industry standard $10 for MMOGs/MMFPS's...

Oh and online plans wont be announced in Q2 '02, the online will be LAUNCHED March '02...

Thanks for the info, it'd be interesting to see how the online multiplayer turns out to be.

<< Actually I think MS will require a fee for online gaming. I imagine $20 per month or something like that. >>

That'd be a turnoff for thoughsands of people I think. Last tiem I played Age of Emipres (long time ago) the Zone was still free.....I don't imagine M$ making people pay for a slightly better version of the Zone...it would cost them lots of customers methinks..but you never know.

Hmm... I didn't know the Xbox was for gaming only.. Good to hear! It's a much more sound strategy because who really wants to browse the internet on their TV when you can do it on a much nicer monitor!

All I gotta say is: Let the games begin boys! The console launching is only the begining, the real battle has yet to begin.

<< Last tiem I played Age of Emipres (long time ago) the Zone was still free >>

that's playing games on another persons computer. afaik, the xbox needs dedicated servers. that aint free. the zone is just matchmaking, no hosts. again im not 100% sure that the games require a server, im just thinking they do.

Depends on the game type. UC will need dedicated servers, if they come out with a multiplayer Halo, it will too. Some games wont need dedicated servers, most will.

Just thought I'd add that I've been running my X-Box for a couple of hours this morning and I haven't noticed any more heat related problems. It is possible like I said before that the thermal paste needed to bond with the processor and heatsink first (I've had this problem before with PCs where they tend to crash when being pushed to 100% on the first night, but then run 100% stable after being burnt in.)

I have a digital picture and I can take pictures of whatever you'd like, but I'm not sure what I can take pictures of that you can't already see on the Internet ... Let me know what you'd like me to take pictures of and I'll do my best!

In that case, How about Wife/Girl Friend/Sister pics?
