He's adorable and the first dog we both have ever had responsibility for.. Now the hard part, how do you guys recommend house training him? Are the guides on the web pretty reliable? Any tricks or tips ? As you can see we have carpet and I know its going to take some to house train him, but would like to think we could do it within a few weeks. BTW, he is 9 weeks old, no name yet... Any suggestions???

Toy poodles are also nice; just don't give them a friggin floofy haircut. They aren't yippy at all, and are really smart.

Careful, these little furbabies (known to fanatics) will completely own your heart in no time. They're really loveable little clowns, and prefer human companionship to that of other dogs-that's why they're often regarded as "aloof". They're also known for being a little stubborn.

won't that just make him pee next to the door? :)

I would recommend against putting anything on the floor to house train the dog. That just teaches the dog to pee in a certain spot. The breeder we got our std. schnauzer from knew some people that could not house break their dog after 2 years because it would continue to pee where they put one of those puppy training pads.

Your best bet is to carefully watch the dog and to catch him in the act. Correct his behavior, take him outside, and then reward him when he goes outside. Also learn when your puppy needs to go (usually 5-10 minutes after eating and after play sessions).

A couple other things I thought of:

If you're crate training, make sure to get the proper sized crate. Get one with an adjustable divider in it so as the pup grows, so can his crate. Optimum size is just big enough to turn in circles comfortably. You don't want to give him too much room because if you do, it is likely he will pee on one side and sleep on the other.

You should continue to expect accidents until they are about 5-6 months old. Don't be too harsh on them, they don't know any better and don't develop full control of their system until they get older.

Lastly, when you take him out to pee, use the same verbal command every time so that it can associate the words with the action. I would avoid letting your dog play when you take him out. Teach him that he is out there to do his business as quick as possible. As soon as he goes, reward him and take him inside. This worked well for us since we don't have a yard to let the dog run around in. So when our dog rings the bell, we take her outside and she does her thing right away. Although the snow on the ground is creating performance anxiety for her.

But if you need to coax her to go because you will be crating her, a small walk is usually enough to stir things up and get them to go.

I have a Shih-Tzu and a half shih-tzu/half lhasa apso (?sp)...

These are the best dogs ever.....

For potty training, put a bell on a string and hang it low to the ground...when you take him out to pee, ring the bell...eventually he will go ring the bell with his nose when he wants to go out...
