Got my system up and running with Thermalright XP-120

CPU temps are down by almost 10C and noise is less than half what it was with the stock AMD cooler. I'm at 44C cpu and 35C case.

I went with the Panaflow 120mm fan from Newegg.com.

I also put in a new OCZ powersupply with one 120mm fan in it.

I'm very happy now. This thing is super quiet now. You can hear fans but it's nothing like the jet airplane it was. With the stock cooler when the fan kicked on to full cool it really was quite loud. Cool and Quiet is great when you are running cool but that fan constantly kicking on and off is really annoying.

This cooler is massive though and it just barely fits in there.

System specs for those interested:

AMD A64 3400+
MSI K8N Neo
512MB Corsair PC3200 RAM
OCZ ModStream 450W Power Supply with OCZ EZMod technology
Lian-Li PC-60 w/side window
2 36GB Western Digital Raptors in RAID 0
1 60GB Maxtor
ATI 9800 NP
DVD Drive
52x CD Drive
CD Burner

It's lower than it was. I'm thinking this MSI board reads high. After I flashed the bios I noticed the temps read quite a bit higher. I was in the mid 50s before this.

hey im thinking of getting that exact psu as u r. although i dont care much about noise (work at a place with LOTS of noise and can block out things very well 🙂)

how does the modstream work? does it look as cool as i presume it to be?

It's pretty sweet looking. I really like the cables it comes with and the fact that you only need to hook up as many as are necessary to power your system. I have so many devices in mine though I pretty much needed them all. All the cabling is sleeved.

I have no complaints. Actually, I have one complaint. The fan guard needs to be removed in order to slide it into my case which is a huge PITA to put the fan guard screws back in it with the motherboard installed. This is more a gripe with the case though than the PSU. Next time I take down this case I'll probably grind a bit of metal off around the back of the case where the PSU slides in.

i also have the xp-120 just to put my two cents in it lowered the temps of my overclocked p4 to 40 idle, but im using crappy compusa paste. when i transfer everything to my new lian li case when i get it, ill put some AC5 on it. the ting is suck a pain to take off because its so huge. however,
to any potential buyers, it is THE most effective (air) heatsink you can buy before going to watercooling.

only reason i wont b buying the xp-120, is becuase it doesnt fit the MSI noe2 platinum 🙁, which is what i will b getting within a month 🙂

Update: I ran it overnight and the next morning temps were 52C. I tried switching the fan around to blow instead of suck but that didn't yield any benefits. I updated the MSI utilities and my temps are now reading 44C...Go figure. I have no idea what my temps are anymore. Nor do I care. My system is quiet and it's stable. What more could you ask for I guess?

I'm running an XP-120 w/Yate Loon 1300 rpm fan and my max temp is 50 C as measured by my MSI 8KN-FSR motherboard (similar to the Platinum but w/o raid). Temp was lower with a 2100 rpm Panaflo but the noise was higher as well.
