And me likes. It was nice to burn a copy of an audio CD I have in 2:58. I did find out that Imation 16x discs do not work at 40x, though. They work fine at 24x, and I haven't tried at 32x yet, but they may work at that speed. At 40x, when it throttled up to the 40x burn, it lost the track and searched frantically for it for the next 5 minutes, never finding it...I needed to reboot to stop it searching.

The disc was fine except for the end (it played in my CD player, even without the lead-out, but the last track was dead). However, the burn was going to take longer than it did at 24x anyway, so I think it needed to slow down everytime it went above 24x, so until I buy new media, I'll stick with 24x speeds. Still a hell of a lot faster than my old 6x (which was originally a 4x, until I flashed the firmware). Doing an 80 minute CD in 4:30 at 24x is so nice compared to 21 minutes with the 4x.

Thanks for reporting your findings, an 80 min CDR in 4:30 is fast. I guess the general consensus on the 32x and 40x drives is that they aren't worthwhile upgrade from a 12X..my 12X burns CDs in 6-7 mins, and since I rarely use it (once a week max, I guess 🙂) its probably not worthwhile to upgrade I'm guessing..I'll wait for the DVD wrtiable battle to play out with other people's funds 🙂

Enjoy your new toy 🙂

That 4:30 time for 80 mins is at 24x, since that's all my current media will handle. I'm using Imation 16x certified 80 minute CD-Rs. They don't burn at 40x, but I'm sure most 32x media probably will. From reviews I've seen of this drive, they can do an 80 minute burn in 3:15.

The copy was from the HD, since I am making multiple copies of the same disc, and I felt it easier to rip and burn from .wav. I'm using Nero 5.5.8.0

i'ved tryed many CDRs. Some don't work if you use ZCLV (above 16X). They will burn fine, but won't work. I found that Taiyo Yuden CDRs are the best to use. THey are usually branded TDK, verbatim, some others. Some find teh CMC media ones work teh worst. Anyways i got a 32X TDK from costco, they are CMC but they work fine at 40X. So thats great. So far the only brands i would recommend is TDK and Mitsumi. If you want to know what factory made your CDRs use CDR ID. I find imations to be the worst, even some compusas work ok. Check out CDRFreaks for a pretty big list of stuff they have tested.

my system does not like the 40x... even after firmware update.
i even got the bsod 🙁
